So fuck them.The Hidden Cameras are totally Indie. They are so Indie. Jesus! If they were any Indier, they’d come wrapped in bows and dusted with kiddy glitter. Maybe they are. Ho, ho.
But!
There is a catch. Our earlier definition of Indie does not apply to the Hidden Cameras. Why?
Because The Hidden Cameras are totally gay. As in Gay. Queer. Batty. Captains Of The Chocolate Speedboat, riding the brown wave down the fudge
tunnel to Glory and Redemption. They’re sort of religiously gay, which is pretty odd.Well, maybe not they… The Hidden Cameras is basically Joel Gibb’s thing. He writes the tunes, and he writes the lyrics. Behold ye sample lyrics from each of this lovely LP’s songs:

Phew! How was that, stinky fingered reader? Was that real enough for you? Did it turn you on? Maybe it did. So what? We are animals, after all. That is what Dr Gibb is really good at –
illustrating our stark animal reality. We are not our clothes, and we are not our carefully constructed sentences. When it comes down to it, we are sweaty and naked and a bit smelly. Mmm.
Lyrically, ‚The Smell Of Our Own‘ covers all bases. Lust, love, shame, remorse, sorrow, confusion, pain, loneliness, togetherness, joy, misery, despair, bumsex.Gotta love bumsex. It is the last frontier. Once that is crossed, we will be either liberated and beautiful, or we will be lost. Who knows? Who cares? Joel seems to be enjoying his time in the
zoo, and he’s been good enough to share it with us. Hell, he could have written poetry and succeeded, but that’s the masterstroke.He’s resurrected Indie, and made it great again, by removing all the lame bits, and just using the ace bits – massive choruses, an orgy of grand
instruments, chords, harmonies, and trill, lush wails. Musically, ‚The Smell Of Our Own‘ is somewhere between The Proclaimers and The Walker Brothers, and that is a pretty special place.Dude, dudette, hemaphrodude – as long as you are open, you will love this album. It will be as important to a lot of people as ‚The Queen Is Dead‘. Some people will get proper battered over it. Some real ugly freakazoids will get married to it. It will up Sage Francis‘ ante, and it will confuse 50 Cent.
Sniff, sniff. We smell classic.

Do you believe in Rock n Roll?Gay Church Folk. Mehr bräuchte es eigentlich nicht. Selten habe ich eine so genau bezeichnete Schublade gesehen, wie für die Musik dieses 14 Personen Kollektivs aus Kanada. Ihr Debüt bietet 10 Popperlen, die klingen wie Belle and Sebastian mit einer Spectorproduktion, wie die seligen Housemartins in einer Jamsession mit Embrace oder ner Mischung aus The Clash und den Beach Boys. Alle Songs hat Mastermind Joel Gibb geschrieben, der darin gerne mal mit expliziter Sprache gleichgeschlechtliche Sexualerlebnisse schildert, was mir allerdings nicht immer wirklich zusagt. Aber diese Musik ist einfach himmlisch.
Ob nun die wundermelodiöse Single ‘Ban Marriage’ mit Pauken und Chören, der mit tremolierendem Gesang vorgetragenen Hymne ‘The animals of prey’, das sehr an Fatboy Slims alte Band erinnernde Handclaptitelstück oder das repetetive ‘Day is dawning’. Und wer mir sagen kann, wie dieser 60er Jahre Schlager heisst, an dem mich das eindringliche ‘Shame’ erinnert, dem bin ich sehr sehr dankbar. Natürlich fehlt hier ein wenig Abwechslung und einige Harmonien kommen einem bekannt vor aber ein mit einer Legion von Instrumenten eingespieltes Popalbum darf das. Und wenn dann in ‘Breathe on it’ die diversen ‘Oohs’, ‘Aahs’ und ‘Boops’ erklingen, ist sowieso alles gut. Da fragt man sich nichts mehr. Da ist man einfach glücklich. Glücklich und dankbar für so eine Platte.Keine Ahnung, on dieses Gaykonzept jetzt Masche oder ernst ist. Das Album würde auf jeden Fall auch ohne funktionieren, ja, wäre sogar besser, denn [“nennt mich Spinner aber in meinem Kopf sind die Bilder”] ich will nicht wirklich Geschichten über ‘fingering foreign dirty holes in the dark’ oder ‘peeing on my shoulders and knees’ lesen/hören. Aber vielleicht bin ich da ja auch allein mit. Auf jeden Fall das beste Popalbum des Jahres bis jetzt. Aber die New Pornographers, äh, ich habe gerade ein déja vu…

Ich will erst mal nicht zu viel sagen um nicht wieder ZU schnell ZU euphorisch zu sein, ABER:
Diese Musik klingt so, als ob sie im Himmel aufgenommen worden wäre. Einiges war an Schönheit nicht auszuhalten so z.B. „Golden Streams“, Breathe On It“ oder der unglaubliche Chor am Ende von „Boys Of Melody“.
Man möge mir den folgenden Satz verzeihen, aber zumindest für die letzten 45 Minuten war das der Fall:

hmmm wieso ist die denn bisher ungehört an mir vorübergegangen?
Aber wenn der Vergleich mit The Polyphonic Spree stimmt ,muß ich mir
die doch gleich mal besorgen (hoffe nur die stehn da nicht auch in solchen
Meßdieneranzügen aufm Cover rum :D ).
