Matador Records, the band’s label, issued a statement late Friday evening saying: „Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment.“

After 27 years of marriage, the ones you thought were gonna make it to death do we part, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon – half the driving force of Sonic Youth – announced plans to divorce. Really? Can’t you just pretend to keep it together until after the holidays? Steve Jobs just died, R.E.M confirmed they’re never making music together again and… I mean.. Have you turned on the news lately? Let me get this straight. Thurston and Kim get a divorce but Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed decide to give it a go? C’mon!!!

The couple have one daughter, 17-year old Coco Hayley who resides in Western Massachusetts.

In a 2008 Spin interview, Moore responds to a questions about his marriage wanting to know what the secret was?

“There’s no secret. We’ve never sold each other out on anything. I can easily follow the allure of wanting to go out and be with the boys, and play industrial noise and smoke pot and drink, but nothing replaces the reality of our relationship. I can’t trade that for anything.

„I can’t think of how or where I’d be without Kim’s influence. And we’re like any couple that’s been together for close to 30 years. There’s a genuine psychophysical connection. Sometimes I feel things happening in me, and I know that something’s going on with her. When you’re married and you have that kind of connection, you become really spiritually, psychologically connected. We grew up together, in a way.”

Das finde ich außerordentlich schade. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass die Band weiter bestehen wird.

Ich ertappe mich dabei, mir alle möglichen, denkbaren Szenarien vorzustellen, in der Hoffnung dass sich das sich abzeichnende Aus vielleicht doch noch irgendwie abwenden lässt. Wenn Moore und Gordon auch nicht mehr miteinander können, so könnte ich mir zum Beispiel eine weitere Kooperation zwischen Moore, Ranaldo und Shelley …

Aber eigentlich bin ich einfach nur perplex. Dass alles einmal ein Ende haben muß ist klar, aber irgendwie hätte ich es mir von SY, von denen ich seit 1985 jedes reguläre Studioalbum (damals auch noch die Maxis) am Tag oder zumindest in der Woche des Erscheinens erworben habe (und das sicher auch in Zukunft tun würde), und die ich bereits in den 80ern live erleben durfte, ganz anders erwartet.

Nun gut, die eigene Plattenfirma berichtet es, und dann wird es wohl ernst damit sein. Bis zum heutigen Tage konnten sich SY ihr Ende jedenfalls jederzeit aus einer Position der Stärke heraus leisten, es gab nach dem Zenit mit „Sister“ und „Daydream Nation“ insgesamt kein langsames Siechtum, höchstens Stagnation auf allerhöchstem Niveau. Ihre beiden letzten Studioalben waren in dieser Hinsicht sogar noch herausragender als sonst. Vielleicht ist 2011 sogar ein gutes Jahr für das Sterben altgedienter 80er Bands. Ich freue mich auf unveröffentlichtes Material, davon wird es sicher noch genug geben.

This show at Chicago’s Smart Bar was recorded on 4-track cassette and consists of live versions of most of the songs from that album, early performances of “Secret Girl” and “Expressway to Yr Skull” (later to be released on Evol) and a rare, never-before-released live rendition of “Kat ’n’ Hat.” Mixed and mastered by the band from the original tape source, this single-CD / double-LP edition includes liner notes by Gerard Cosloy and Sonic Youth engineer Aaron Mullan, plus unpublished photos by Pat Blashill and Steven Koress * Goofin.

Exile on Main Street wird vollkommen überbewertet

Ich bin gerade durch das Buch von Kim Gordon auf die Idee gekommen mal wieder Sonic Youth zu hören. Ich mag die Band immer schon recht gern, hab sie aber größtenteils ignoriert.

Die letzten paar LPs sind ja noch gut erhältlich, jetzt frage ich mich ob die Box oder das Reissue von Daydream Nation sich lohnen, bis jetzt habe keine wirklich aussagekräftigen Meinungen dazu gefunden. Kann jemand was über das Remastering sagen?

This reissue does what reissues have to do these days, raising the volume to compete with all the over-compressed new stuff on your mp3 player. Someone’s clearly taken care with the process, making sure not to spoil the wide dynamics of this music, but this kind of re-master isn’t the best fit for the open-room feel of the original: I’d be lying if I said the crystalline brambles of guitar in these songs didn’t suffer a little from being flattened out like this. (Steve Shelley’s busy, subtle drumming gets a particularly raw deal.) Mild audiophiles– or anyone attached to the feel of the original CD and LP issues– might want to spring for the vinyl re-release.

Danke, das habe ich auch gefunden, aber da geht’s ja nicht um die Vinyl-Ausgabe sondern um eine 2-CD Edition.

Also ich finde die Anschaffung lohnt sich auf jeden Fall, gibt schon was her die Box meine ich. Die anderen habe ich mir auch gekauft…ich bin kein Klangpurist, sondern ein SY Komplettist …aber die Platte klingt sau gut
