Hier das gleiche Spiel gestern Abend. Da dreisterweise trotz des abgebrochenen Konzerts in regelmäßigen Abständen die „World Stage“ Sequenz gesendet wurde, haben wir hier bis etwa 21 Uhr vor dem Fernseher verharrt, in der Hoffnung es würde jeden Moment weitergehen.

The R.E.M. reissue campaign continues with a 25th anniversary deluxe edition of their second album, 1984’s Reckoning, due out June 23 on I.R.S./A&M/UMe. Like last year’s deluxe treatment of R.E.M.’s debut, Murmur, the deluxe Reckoning is a two-disc set. The second disc contains a live show taped at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago on July 7, 1984 and aired on Chicago radio station WXRT. The Aragon show features eight Reckoning songs, old songs „Gardening at Night“ from Chronic Town and „Radio Free Europe,“ „9-9“ and „Sitting Still“ from Murmur, and new songs „Driver 8“ and „Hyena“, which would show up on Fables of the Reconstruction and Lifes Rich Pageant, respectively.
180 gram vinyl versions of the reissued Reckoning and Murmur will also be released on June 23.

Stereogum: Fischerspooner cover obscure R.E.M. songThe final version of R.E.M.’s 2001 LP Reveal featured twelve tracks, however the original master (known as Reveal 1.0) contained two songs that didn’t make that final cut: „Free Form Jazz Jam,“ and the excellently lush ballad „Fascinating“ which was an unfortunate omission that gets some retrospective justice courtesy of Fischerspooner. Warren and Casey have covered the track at Michael Stipe’s request as a bonus to their forthcoming Entertainment LP. Mr. Fischer tells us how their version came together:
The song was written for Up but never released. So Michael told us he had this song and he thought it would be really good for us. He said ‚I think this song would be great for you and I think you guys should record it.‘ Their version is very somber, so it was a challenge to figure out how were going to do it in our style. But it was great. Warren [Fischer] took it and sped it up. I love the lyrics and I love the melody, and everything about it just seemed right.
Seems Casey has the record wrong, but no matter: Fischerspooner’s is a listen-worthy take on a great song, dressing the song’s original pathos in a cloak of strings and electropop.

R.E.M. Recording in Portland with Tucker Martine!
Okay, take a deep breath. Now read the headline once again. It’s rare that I get starstruck in a city like Portland that’s, in reality, a pretty small place, but this news is just too exciting not to share. Last week, R.E.M.—one of the best rock bands of all-time, the most consistent act of the 1980s, and a huge personal favorite—were in town lay down the foundation for what might become its 15th studio album.
Better yet, the band is working with producer Tucker Martine, who’s been at the helm of some of my favorite records (Laura Gibson’s Beasts of Seasons, Thao’s We Brave Bee Stings And All) the last few years. I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon in March hanging out in Martine’s home studio, and I know that he’s also a huge R.E.M. fan. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime, really. I dropped Martine a line and here’s what he said:
„Yes, it’s true—the band is in town fleshing out songs for their next record. We are tracking at Jackpot. It might just be demos but hopefully we’ll get something good enough for the next record but the band is working quickly, definitely putting feeling over precision and it sounds amazing. It’s all pretty low key and under the radar but I can confirm that they are in town kicking around ideas for the next record. I’m delighted to be taking part.“
R.E.M.’s last effort was 2008’s Accelerate, a sort of underrated return to form after two pretty mediocre (okay, Around the Sun kind sucks, but it’s still Michael Stipe singing) records. It was also the band’s biggest rock push to date, an updated version of its classic jangle-rock sound with a bit more distortion and pep in Peter Buck’s classic Rickenbacker guitar. I’m not sure how the band got in touch with Martine, but Buck is in Portland quite a bit these days, playing with the Minus 5 and stopping to catch a show every once in a while. How exciting! More updates on the project coming later this week.

Da Murmur zu meinen absoluten Lieblingsalben zählt, grüble ich gerade darüber nach was du unter einem „alten müden Klangbild“ verstehst. In meinen Ohren klingt es auch nach 25 Jahren sehr lebendig.
Auch ‚Fables of….‘ ist für mich deutlich stärker als ‚Around The Sun‘.@bellebrocken: das gilt natürlich auch für ‚Monster‘ ;)
