"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered." - George Best --- Dienstags und donnerstags, ab 20 Uhr, samstags ab 20.30 Uhr: Radio StoneFMCOOL @ NIGHT
ON TOUR
BY IRA ROBBINS
Special to NewsdayJanuary 25, 2007
When Paul Weller shut down The Jam in 1982, England mourned one of its most reliable hit factories. From his teenaged Class of ’77 origins alongside the Sex Pistols and the Clash, Weller was an outspoken oddity: He wore suits and ties, refused to accept the „punk“ title, praised such ’60s idols as The Who and Small Faces, paid homage to American soul music and celebrated Britishness.
His subsequent work – first in the jazz-soul of Style Council and then in an even more subdued solo career – has kept Weller a venerated star in his homeland, earning him a Lifetime Achievement Brit Award last year. „It sounds cool,“ he says tartly by phone from London, „but when you realize the Spice Girls got it [six] years before, it takes the edge off a little bit.“ He’s selective about his accolades, however, and recently declined the queen’s offer to make him a Commander of the British Empire.
Although Weller has never been a big record-seller in America, a touring suggestion from his U.S. label, Yep Roc, has generated an unprecedented measure of buzz. Tied to the release of the retrospective „Hit Parade“ (available as a single disc and four-CD box), Weller is doing three sold-out shows at Irving Plaza next week, playing Jam songs on Monday, Style Council songs on Tuesday and a career sampler on Wednesday.
„I don’t want to give too much away,“ he says, „but we’ll start off and do 10 Jam or Style Council tunes, and then a normal set. People [shouldn’t] expect us to do a greatest hits thing – we don’t really do that. Hopefully, my audience will understand that it’s going to be more B-sides or album tracks as opposed to [The Jam’s 1980 British chart-topper] ‚Going Underground.'“
With his former Jam bandmates long estranged (drummer Rick Buckler now leads an uncanny-sounding Jam tribute band called The Gift), Weller has no qualms about doing this without them. „This isn’t any sort of a revival thing. It’s just my old tunes. I understand that people associate these songs with a certain time and mostly with a certain band, but – for me – they’re my songs.“ He’s got a point: the context and brand by which the music was originally issued may endure for record-buyers, but he looks on it all as a body of work.
Weller normally includes a few Jam oldies („That’s Entertainment,“ „A Town Called Malice,“ „In the Crowd“) in his sets, but others, he says, „I haven’t played since I wrote them, which is a long, long time ago. So I’ve had to relearn them [using] songbooks, which is quite weird. As a middle-aged man of 49, which I’m going to be this year, I have to find an emotional connection to sing them properly.“
Weller is bringing his regular band over for these shows, whose format will not be repeated anywhere. (His U.S. visit will conclude with three regular-set dates in Los Angeles next month.)
Drummer Steve White has been with him since the Style Council days. Tuesday’s show highlighting that band’s repertoire, Weller says, „will be special for me and Whitey, ‚cause we haven’t played those songs for 20 years or more. It brings back good memories for us.“ And, undoubtedly, for fans.

From this week’s Village Voice.
The Mod Rules
Seeing Paul Weller in concert now necessitates selling your car, your
furniture, and possibly your soul
by Rob Trucks
January 19th, 2007Some time around Thanksgiving, the announcement came down from the
punk-pop heavens. Paul Weller—fertile genius behind the Jam (a truly
once-in-a-lifetime amalgamation of Brit-centric fury without fear of
melody or musicianship), the Style Council (a commercial-leaning journey of white boy soul through the influence of Motown), and an ongoing solo career (bring back the guitars, boys, but save the acerbics for the lyric sheet)—would take the stage at Irving Plaza for the last three
nights in January. To celebrate the release of the career-spanning
four-disc box set Hit Parade that will appear the week before, one night
of Weller’s mini-residency would highlight the Jam, one night the Style
Council, and one night his solo work.Tickets for all three shows sold out in less than five minutes. On eBay,
Style Council and solo night admissions have been resold in the $250 to
$400 range. Add another 25 percent premium for Jam night, making it the most in-demand concert ticket since the Stones played Bill Clinton’s
birthday bash at the Beacon last summer. And yet, ironically enough, during the Modfather’s last business-related
Stateside visit less than two years ago, more than a few shows were
cancelled—due to poor ticket sales. So what’s causing all this recent ruckus?
„Perhaps I’ve just reached that grand old age, eh?“ Weller suggests from
his home in England. Perhaps so. With the passing of James Brown and Tom Petty’s recent denials of impending retirement, perhaps what becomes a legend most is the prospect that he might one day walk away. And yet no one really retires from the job of rock star—how many farewell tours have the Who launched? And if the Stones have taught us anything, it’s that the rock ’n‘ roll lifestyle can be stretched ad infinitum. But make no mistake, even without threatening to abandon us forever,
Paul Weller is already a legend. At least in Britain. Count as testament
the Hit Parade box, a chronological and almost mathematical account of
his astounding 64 British singles. Or last year’s reception of the Brit
Award—something akin to a Lifetime Achievement Award—for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Pretty impressive for an artist who has not so much as sniffed a gold record, in any of his three incarnations, stateside. And yet 30 years into a professional music career, Weller’s not yet
turned 50. When the Jam’s debut, In The City, was released in 1977, the
young mod was but a tender 18. And Paul Weller’s not going anywhere. At least he hopes not. „It’s quite the opposite really,“ he says. „I mean,
we just come off a U.K. tour last week which was just amazing. We had
some of the best gigs we’ve ever played, so for me it’s still very
relevant and still fresh, you know. I mean, it’s hard for me to sort of
relate to the fact that 30 years have gone by since I made me first
record. It’s a f–king blink of an eye to me.“So what is causing all the scalper fuss now? Sure, Irving Plaza isn’t
exactly cavernous—tri-state Brit ex-pats alone could easily fill the
place 10 times over—but a sellout, and a hard sellout, is still a
sellout. So attribute at least some of the demand to the Jam night/Style
Council night/solo night setup, which affords us the opportunity of
perhaps the world’s first Jam reunion, albeit without the rest of the
Jam. In any case, with three consecutive shows covering three
consecutive eras, Weller and his band have what sounds like a
significant amount of material to rehearse. Which may be news to Paul
Weller.„It’s a bit of a challenge,“ he says, „to play some tunes we haven’t
played forever, or for a long time anyway. I mean, it’s not like each
night’s going to be exclusively Jam and Style Council. We’re going to
play more songs than we normally play, but it’ll still be a mixture of
things.“Uh oh. Maybe Jam night won’t be as pure as you might assume. But however this holy trinity of anticipated performances goes down, know that none of this—not the boxed set, not the linked concerts—was Paul Weller’s doing. „None of them were my idea,“ he says. „If it doesn’t work out, it’s not my idea.“

Out of the sadness, far from the madness...Und In the city und Tubestation wurden nicht wie ich erwartet hatte wieder gespielt.

Oder hat er „It’s a very deep sea“ schon mal solo gespielt? Nee, oder? Den Rest schon, wenn auch vor langer langer Zeit (Speak Like A Child). Aber eigentlich hatte ich mir die Konzerte etwas anders vorgestellt.
