Brit Awards interview
Ben Jones interviews Paul Weller
Virgin Radio’s [U][COLOR=#0000ff]Ben Jones caught up with The Modfather, Paul Weller, at an exclusive pre-Brit Awards performance for Virgin Radio. You can [U][COLOR=#800080]listen to the interview here, or read what the Brits Lifetime Achievement Award winner had to say, below:
BJ: Big week for you isnt’ it? Is this a warm up gig for the Brits?
PW: We always need to warm up, it’s always good to blow the cobwebs off, so to speak, and more than anything, we’re always up for playing – you know?
BJ: The Brits isn’t exactly a natural gig for you to do is it?
PW: It’s not the normal thing I’d do, obviously not, but the fact that I’ve been asked, and you know, it’s been a long time, I think it’s sort of, deserved isn’t it?
BJ: Cos you won a few in 95, 96, and you didn’t bother turning up, it makes sense for you to turn up now doesn’t it?
PW: Well I can’t leave it any longer can I, otherwise I won’t be around to receive it!
BJ: I don’t know if this is tabloid bollocks, or whatever, but I heard that McCartney was originally offered it and turned it down because he said that it implied it was the end of his career. I don’t think that’s the case for you, because ‘As is now’ is one of your best albums for years.
PW: End of career’s when you want it to be isn’t it. You know, if you’re still into music, and you’re still enjoying what you’re doing then it’s ongoing isn’t it.
BJ: And you are going through, I think, quite a prolific period. New album out, and I presume you’re playing a few of the new tracks live as you tour around the UK
PW: Yeah, I’m writing at the minute, and we’ve got a couple of new tunes we’re going to put in the set, and yes, it’s an exciting time for me at the moment.
BJ: Now you’ve never really been a fan of award shows, so I guess on the Brits night, you’re going to do something quite special. Is it the token medley of songs?
PW: It’s not a medley, we’re going to do what we normally do, we’ll do some old songs, and some new songs, but we had to play 4 live songs at the end of the show, which is good for us.
BJ: You do have an incredibly loyal fan base. They turned up here this afternoon, they’re all outside waiting already, and this new music you’re making, the songs are amongst the most requested on Virgin, they want to hear the arctic monkeys as much as they want to hear Weller. What a great position to be in in 2006.
PW: What better position could you be in. I mean, it still feels relevant to us as well. To me, when we’re playing…
BJ: What motivates you?
PW: Well the music motivates me, I’m just in love with music still, you know. I mean, sometimes that goes for a while, but it always comes back, and it always comes back to the music for me. You forget about all the rest of the rubbish that goes with it, and it’s just the music itself you know.
BJ: What songs are you going to do tonight?PW: I don’t like to give too much away really
BJ: I heard you doing Savages earlier, that’s one of my favourite tracks. In lyric terms it’s quite a brutal record, but when you play it…
PW: Well, it’s contrasted with the kind of melody, that happens in a lot of my tunes really. We’re going to do some old, some new, little bit of everything.
BJ: How much of your recent interviews are true, and to what extent have you been misquoted?
PW: I’m pretty sure I said all of it to be quite honest with you. I thought they were being polite if anything.
BJ: So who was it, James Blunt, Queen, McCartney, anybody else?!
PW: No, I never said anything about Macca, you’re joking – never said anything about Sir Paul, um, I was asked, I said what I thought, and there you go…
BJ: So you do wear your heart on your sleeve then?
PW: Well, up to a certain point. Sometimes I cross the barrier, but there you go…
BJ: By your own admission, All Mod Cons saved the Jam, and I think you were going to give it up if it didn’t work out…
PW: Well, I don’t know if we would have given it up, I wouldn’t have given it up, I would’ve gone back to the pubs and clubs, and played there for the rest of my life I suppose. I would have had to of played music cos I can’t do anything else. But I would have done it on a different scale, a different level.
BJ: What advice would you give to those bands which are still touring the pubs and clubs?
PW: Keep at it, you know. That’s easier said than done, but 60/70% of this business is perseverance. You need a bit of luck, and obviously you need talent as well, but it’s dedication and perseverance, and some kind of self-belief I suppose.
BJ: If you look at that timeline, in 1977 I think it was, there you are, the Jam is formed, you go on tour with the Clash, you have a hit record. In this day and age, it doesn’t happen that easily.
PW: No, but it does happen, I mean, look at the arctic monkeys. What’s great about that story is that they’ve done it on their own terms. Fucked off top of the pops, fucked off lots of people, and they’ve just done their own thing.
BJ: They’ve also set their own agenda – they won’t do interviews.
PW: That’s a powerful thing, and it’s great that their audience see the value of that as well.
BJ: Now, Stanley Road, Wildwood all regarded as great albums, how much more are we going to get from the album, are there any more singles, and are there any more albums in the pipeline?
PW: We’ve got a live album coming out in June time, we’re looking at putting out a few singles this year. Non album singles – I quite fancy doing that anyway. And then I guess we’ll probably start on another studio album in Autumn time, which won’t be out til the year following really.
BJ: But the lyrical content of your music has changed quite a lot over the last 30 years. It was quite vitriolic in the 70s and 80s, little bit mellower in the 80s, and there are songs on this album, and I go back to Savages again that are quite vitriolic. What does this album say about Paul Weller in 2005/2006?
PW: I don’t know what it says about me really, I never really look at those things
BJ: Is it quite an organic process?
PW: Yeah, it’s just whatever I feel like writing at the time to be honest with you. It’s never really that thought about, and it’s always easier to see those things after the event. It might take me 6 months or a year or 2 years to think about it. But I never, I’m not particularly one to stop and think about those things anyway, I’m too busy just getting on with it really. When I write a song, whatever the subject matter is, it’s just however I feel that day or that moment, or that week or whatever it may be.
BJ: Where do you write? Can you write on tour, or do the songs just arrive in your head?
PW: Yeah, they more come and find me really, and it’s more a question of just working them out, which can take the time some times. They can happen at any time really, I don’t set aside time to do that really, it’s just when I feel like it.
BJ: Everytime I see you you have some big tour on the go, you’re never at home, you seem always to be doing what you love. What’s going on at the moment, are you touring the UK, are there dates coming up, and what about some festivals? I read in the NME a whisper about the IoW?
PW: Yeah, we’re still waiting to hear back and all that stuff, we’re hopefully doing T in the park and the V festivals, IoW, we’re waiting to hear, but we’re up for doing all of it really.
BJ: So you just say you want to do it and it just depends on whether they pull their fingers out and sort it out? You need to, because the fans this evening, and the fans on Wednesday night are going to absolutely lap up the music. Congratulations on the award, and for God’s sake turn up won’t you?
PW: I’ll be there!

Staring at a grey sky, try to paint it blue - Teenage Blue„Non album singles – I quite fancy doing that anyway“.
Nostalgisch,
