mich interessieren auch die coverversionen von ian gomm, don dixon und dave alvin, aber ansonsten…

beim „labour of love“-album sind bekanntere künstler dabei, u.a. graham parker, tom petty, marshall crenshaw & elvis costello.

On March 15, Yep Roc will reissue Nick Lowe’s landmark second solo album Labour of Lust on CD, LP, and for the first time, digitally.

Originally released in 1979, and out of print for nearly two decades, the album has been remastered to its original glory and now includes both the U.K.-only track „Endless Grey Ribbon“ and the U.S.-only track „American Squirm,“ along with the bonus B-Side „Basing Street.“ The reissue also comes with a 12-page booklet complete with artwork by revolutionary graphic artist Barney Bubbles, and essays by noted music journalist Will Birch and reissue producer (and former Lowe A&R man) Greg Geller.

Hailed by Trouser Press as „a brilliant piss-taker that pairs sprightly pop and savage lyrical wit,“ Labour of Lust also contains Nick Lowe’s biggest hit to date, the album opener „Cruel To Be Kind.“ The song climbed the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching #12 in the U.S. Check out the original music video below.

The Yep Roc reissue also upgrades the album’s original sleeve notes, properly crediting the special guests–Elvis Costello (vocals on „American Squirm“), Huey Lewis (harmonica on „Born Fighter“), Pete Thomas of The Attractions (drums on „American Squirm“), and Bob Andrews of The Rumour/Brinsley Schwarz (Oberheim synthesizer on „Endless Grey Ribbon“)–who performed alongside the other members of Lowe’s band Rockpile (guitarist/vocalist Dave Edmunds, guitarist Billy Bremner, and drummer Terry Williams).

Neben dem anstehenden neuen Nick Lowe-Album ist nun auch ein Mitschnitt eines Rockpile-Konzertes in Montreux 1980 bei Eagle Records erschienen.

Rockpile was formed in the mid-seventies by Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds. Due to contractual obligations, Lowe and Edmunds had to record for different labels so the Rockpile name was only used when the band played live even though they performed on records by both artists. Playing at Montreux in July 1980, the band were at their peak following the simultaneous release in 1979 of Nick Lowe’s “Labour Of Lust” and Dave Edmunds’ “Repeat When Necessary”. They had enjoyed a string of hit singles, most of which are included here, and were surfing on a tide of critical acclaim. Ahead of them lay the prospect of finally releasing an album under the Rockpile name, “Seconds Of Pleasure”, which would appear in autumn the same year. Sadly it proved to be the only album ever released as Rockpile as the band broke up soon after but here at Montreux they are in fantastic form and this CD enhances their reputation as one of the best live bands of their era.

Der Rockpile-Mitschnitt ist was für mich, danke! Bei dem neuen Albumm werde ich mich wohl vorerst zurückhalten. Die überwiegend negativen Kritiken, die ich bisher gelesen habe, halten mich (noch) vom Erwerb ab.
