Von Shank fehlt mir erstmal noch die „Barefoot Adventure“ auf Vinyl. Da wäre ich nie so schnell drauf gekommen, wenn bei beiden nicht Carmell Jones dabei wäre. Dabei sind beide Sessions wirklich klasse.--

Von Shank fehlt mir erstmal noch die „Barefoot Adventure“ auf Vinyl. Da wäre ich nie so schnell drauf gekommen, wenn bei beiden nicht Carmell Jones dabei wäre. Dabei sind beide Sessions wirklich klasse.Oh, Shank ist generell fast immer klasse! Die frühen Pacific-Alben gab’s mal in einem Mosaic, das ich sehr, sehr gerne mag!
Hab damals eine Radio-Sendung über die Box gehört und mir war sofort klar, dass ich die haben muss… das Album mit Billy Bean ist auch sehr schön („Slippery When Wet“ – wie „Barefoot Adventure“ ein Surf-Film-Soundtrack), ebenso die Quartett-Aufnahmen mit Claude Williamson („Bud Shank Quartet“, „Bud Shank Quartet featuring Claude Williamson“, „Bud Shank Plays Tenor“ und „Bud Shank in Africa“).
Die Zusammenarbeit mit Bud Cooper hingegen mag nicht allen gefallen… ich hab’s geschafft, das Mosaic Select noch zu ergattern nach dem grossen Mosaic-Debakel vor einiger Zeit, hab aber noch nicht alles gehört. Am vetrautesten ist mir „Blowin‘ Country“ und eben darauf stützt sich mein Urteil. Shank ist ein klasse Altsaxer, ein guter Flötist und Barisaxer (und ein passabler Tenorsaxer – von den Quartett-Alben würd ich das betreffende daher als letztes suchen), Cooper ein etwas blutarmer Pres/Brothers-Tenorist… wenn sie aber Flöte und Oboe kombinieren… na ja, reizvoll ist das schon, aber man darf nicht die grossartige bluesige Oboe von Lateef erwarten.
Sehr gut gefällt mir die Session mit Bill Perkins (ein viel lebendigerer Tenorist als Coop).
Da fällt mir ein: ein sehr tolles Shank-Album hab ich auf Vinyl: „Live at the Haig“! Auf dem Cover ist ein Fender Rhodes abgebildet, Williamson spielt aber Piano… leider? Ich weiss es nicht… spannend wäre das sicher zu hören gewesen!
