Ich poste das mal hier, kann gerne einen eigenen Thread damit eröffnen falls gewünscht (auch hinsichtlich Wiederauffindbarkeit) – diese Listen sind dem Buch von John Fordham entnommen, auf Deutsch heisst es „Das grosse Jazz Buch“ und ist eine Art billigst-Version eines Coffee Table Buchs, das ich mal für den Preis von zwei Sammiches (Poppa Lou lässt grüssen) gekauft habe. Die Originalausgabe erschien 1993 und hiess „Jazz“, ebenso hiess die erste deutsche Ausgabe (1994).

Fordham kommentiert alle vorgestellten Aufnahmen kurz, aber das ginge dann doch zu weit, das auch noch abzutippen…
Die Label sind oft jene, auf denen die UK-Versionen erschienen sind – sofern mir die Original-Label bekannt sind, füge ich sie in eckigen Klammern ([]) ein, die Jahre sind die Jahre, in denen die enthaltenen Aufnahmen entstanden sind.

Find ich im grossen Ganzen eine gute Liste… am Ende fasert’s etwas aus und wird noch dieses und jenes reingepackt… und natürlich sind viele alte Aufnahmen mittlerweile in anderer Form greifbar, aber wenn man im Buch die Details sieht und liest, was auf den LPs enthalten war, die Fordham da empfiehlt, erschliesst sich oft recht schnell, dass er auch da viele gute Tips gibt und die „essentials“ wirklich drauf sind (z.B. bei den Jelly Roll Morton Alben).

Vielleicht ist es wirklich schade, diese Liste nicht exponierter zu Posten… sollen wir einen „Jazz-Kanon“-Thread machen?

Das Cannonball-Album finde ich eher eine schrullige Wahl… andere, die immer noch jenseits des erwartbaren gewesen wären, wären etwa „Live at the Lighthouse“ oder „Them Dirty Blues“ gewesen (gehören aber seit Cannonballs Abgang zu Capitol).

Wes Montgomery fehlt ebenfalls, von Griffin hätte ich wohl „Way Out“ oder „JG Sextet“ gewählt.

Monk, Montgomery und Evans werden erwähnt, ebenso wie Sonny Rollins (dessen „Freedom Suite“ bestimmt einer der grossen Klassiker des Labels ist). Ich finde die Idee, die offensichtlchsten Alben („Brilliant Corners“, „The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery“, „Freedom Suite“, „Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco“) eigentlich gut… aber etwas mehr einleitenden Text hätte ich schön gefunden (sind nur zwei recht kurze Abschnitte). Zu den Alben gibt’s auch noch kurze Textet, aber das ganze ist 1,5 Seiten lang, das wird mir dann doch zuviel mit abtippen…

Si la rareté de ce disque suffirait presque à en justifier la présence dans notre compactothèque, c’est bien davantage sa configuration atypique qui mérite toute l’attention. Alors qu’on avait pris l’habitude de l’entendre souffler plus vite et plus fort que ses rivaux lors de blowing sessions mémorables, Johnny Griffin oscille ici entre les lignes chambristes de deux contrebasses (Larry Gales et Bill Lee) et le arabesques haut perchées d’un cor (Julius Watkins). Apparemment assagi dals le Soft And Furry introductif, le saxophoniste prouve dès le titre suivant qu’il n’a toujours rien à craindre de ses adversaires.

„INTÉGRALE DJANGO REINHARDT“,
20 DOUBLES CD FRÉMEAUX

Réalisé par l’expert Daniel Nevers en 20 doubles CD accompagnés de copieux livrets hyper érudits et bourrés de faces rares, voire inédites. Présentation archaïque et encombrante, mais édition de référence. Sous le titre trompeur de „réédition du centenaire“, ces 20 CD sont désormais regroupés à l’identique en trois lots proposés à un prix très attractif. Puisque le premier lot paru est proposé entre 64 € (promo) et 80 # pour 7 doubles (soit 14 CD) vendus séparément 30 € chacun !). Deuxième lot prévu pour fevrier, le troisième pour septembre.

„DJANGOLOGIE, 1928-1950″,
20 CD EMI

Rassemblant les oeuvres du catalogue Pathé (EMI), la „Djangologie“ fut l’une des premières grandes intégrales consacrées en LP à un artiste jazz, et fut la réference jusqu’à l’apparition du CD aux honneurs duqzel elle n’eut pas droit (autrement qu’en version tronquée). Trois décennies aprèse l’avènement du CD, EMI en propose enfin une version CD pour une somme voisine de 51 € sous pochettes cartonnées, quasi fac-similé des 18 pochettes originales, sans liner notes ni livret aditionel. Soit une intégrale (qui ne l’est pas) des seules possessions du catalogue EMI, de 1928 à 1950. À quoi l’on a ajouté 2 CD bonus comportant 27 „inédits“ tirés des séances romaines de 1949 et 1950. À comparer avec le track listing de l’intégrale Frémeux, il n’y a là en fait que 3 inédits : Nature Boy, Night and Day et une troisième version de Micro. Le reste est chez Frémeaux en plus complet. Et dire que les responsaires d’EMI France ont été parmi les plus ardents militants de l’abrogation de la loi qui permet à Frémeaux à travailler !

„MANOIR DE MES RÊVES“,
1 COFFRET DE 26 CD LE CHANT DU MONDE

Ce joli cube résume en 20 CD l’oeuvre en leader de Django, plus 5 CD en sideman et 1 CD bonus „Django Live !“. Période couverte : 1934-1953, soit pour 69€ un concurrent direct de la Djangologie de EMI, mais avec en plus un livret de 120 pages (texte français et anglais) sur un corpus plus étendu, qui fait hélas l’impasse sur les faces musette et variétés de Django (mais j’en connais qui s’en foutent).

„RETROSPECTIVE“,
1 COFFRET DE 3 CD + 1 DVD SAGA / UNIVERSAL

Dans notre sélection du cinquantenaire de la mort de Django en mai 2003, „Retrospective“ avait eu notre préférence pour l’iconographie, la qualité de la sélection (1934-1953) et le livret co-signé Michel Mercier (à qui l’on doit également „Django Forever“) et Alain Antonietto, deux djangophiles avertis. Un bonus de taille s’est ajouté depuis 2003 : les seules images sonores de Django, avec le Quintette du Hot Club de France dans le documentaire Jazz Hot où il interprète J’attendrai en 1949. Impressionant !

„LA LÉGENDE DE DJANGO REINHARDT, 40 TITRES D’ANTHOLOGIE“,
1 DOUBLE CD SWING-PATHÉ-EMI

L’une des réussites du cinquantenaire en 2003, ce double CD reste d’actualité mais a toujours le tort d’ignorer les dates d’enregistrement. Le plus : la version de 7 minutes de Nuages en solo en 1950 (évidemment présente das la „Djangologie / EMI“, l’ingégrale Frémeaux et le coffret Le Chant du monde).

„DJANGO FOREVER“,
1 COFFRET DE 5 CD EMARCY / UNIVERSAL

Bêtement sous-titré „Les 100 plus belles mélodies de Django Reinhardt“, un joli boîtier métallique (qui n’entrera pas forcément das vos rayonnages) contenant 5 CD en pochette de carton et un livret de 36 pages (dont 4 de liner notes). Pas de chronologie, mais une série de cinq thématiques: „Quintette du Hot Club de France“ (principalement avant guerre), „Inspiration“ (selon une logique qui nous échappe, mais qui privilégie l’après-guerre), „Ballades“ (de la période de l’aprèse-guerre), „Djangologie“ (que des compositions de Django, de 1936 à 1953), „Big Bands et orchestres“ (principalement la période de la guerre). Un coffret qui a l’avantage de surprendre, d’éviter les poncifs et d’insister sur la très féconde année 1947 dont les faces ne sont pas toujours faciles à réunir. Dommage que l’ingénieur du son ait laissé sauter sa pointe de lecture sur le magnifique Belleville.

„DJANGOLOGIE“,
1 DIGIPACK DE 4 CD LE CHANT DU MONDE

Rien à voir avec la Djangologie Pathé/EMI, mais un résumé chronologique du coffret „Manoir de mes rêves“ avec un livret de 78 pages.

„PÊCHE À LA MOUCHE“,
1 DOUBLE CD POLYGRAM / UNIVERSAL

Préparée par Jean-Philippe Allard et Daniel Richard en 1991 avec les témoignages de Hubert Rostaing, Gérard Lévêque et Pierre Michelot, cette édition exemplaire rassemble les faces Blue Star de 1947 et 1953, notamment la fameuse séance du 10 mars 1953 avec la dernière version de Nuages.

[gtw empfiehlt: Frémeaux für den Vielfrass, Le Chant du Monde für den grossen und Rétrospective für den kleinen Hunger… gtw besitzt natürlich… die Intégrale, sowie die Mosaic-Box, welche die kompletten QHCF Swing/HMW Sessions enthält und hier übergangen wird, dazu einzeln alle Jazz in Paris CDs von Django – acht an der Zahl – und eine olle Definitive Box mit all den Sessions mit amerikanischen Musikern… die Chant du Monde und Rétrospective Sets hab ich nie genauer inspiziert, soll’s denn die „Djangologie“ sein – liest man obigen Kommentar wird man meine Skepsis verstehen – dann rate ich doch zur LP-Version, die ich mir mal kaufen wollte vor fünfzehn Jahren… ich zog meine Kreise drum, aber als ich dann zuschlagen wollte, war sie weg… ob die LP-Box mehr Infos enthielt, weiss ich nicht mehr, glaube mich aber an ein Booklet zu erinnern in LP-Grösse aber mit wenigen Seiten? Vielleicht weiss jemand sonst was dazu?]

Ausgerechnet hier (wo ich doch mit Garbarek nur mässig was anfangen kann) muss ich mal Einsprache erheben… die Vitous- und Peacock-Scheiben sind nur wirklich nicht essentiell. Die Vitous wurde beim Erscheinen unglaublich gehypt, hab sie aber seit langem nicht mehr gehört – ziemlich langweilig (die zweite – ohne Garbarek – klingt besser, aber ich hab sie doch noch nicht gekauft).
Und gemäss den gestrigen Diskussionen im Jarrett-Thread müsste von dessen European Quartet eher „Belonging“ in die Liste.
