    Hello Everyone,

Delighted to say Domino Records are releasing ‚Roaring The Gospel‘ on 4th June. Below is part of the press release, describing where the songs are from and such.

    Cheers,

    JY

    Roaring The Gospel

    1. A Man With My Skills

(From the Tender To The Blues EP)

And now you’re telling me that she’s been around the houses, and that makes me a jealous man indeed

„This is a song I wrote when I’d just left the band I’d been playing in. It pretty much describes a friend of mine trying to drag me into the alcoholic hole he was in and me doing my best to dream a way out of it. Good wholesome family fun.“

    2. Someplace Simple

    (From the Someplace Simple EP)

Wouldn’t you like to be the man by her side when she says – who’d like to move someplace simple?

„My good buddy Morgan was singing the refrain to this song whilst we were touring the USA. I thought it sounded too good to fall prey to his bad memory and lazy recording habits, so I snatched it and wrote a song around it. Kenny Creosote and I recorded it one afternoon when I was in Fife moving a wardrobe for my Gran.“

    3. Blue Madonnas

    (From the St. Patrick EP)

The Hare Krisnas have no luck with my Catholic battered soul

„I recorded this in my folk’s garage over Christmas 2000. Christmas temperatures don’t mix so well with garage dwelling banjos and Double bass, so most of the session was spent rewinding the tape and cursing, as the instruments weaved in and out of tune“

    4. Seven Streams

(From the Houston Party Records Hoopoe EP (Spanish release))

I hope she doesn’t consider me a curse, though I hear since then she’s had far worse than me

„I’d been reading a set of short stories by Benedict Kiely whilst travelling around the Scottish Highlands. I happened upon a few similar sole travellers and old friends, and one by one they made it into this song. I recorded it in my living room and it features the first hearing of my violin playing, which is very bad indeed.“

    4. The Hills & The Heath

    (Previously unreleased)

just the warmth of the touch and the love, when I needed it most

„This was a demo of a track originally intended for The Year Of The Leopard. We ended up not even recording it properly as we’d ran out of time. I love the percussion in this song, and the way the verses roll into one another. But then, I wrote it, so I probably should.“

    5. Song To The Siren

(B-side to Surf Song 7″ single)

„When ‚Hoopoe‘ was released, Houston Party Records asked me over to Spain to promote it, and whilst there a hairy young man came up to me after a show and said „Congratulations, that must take a lot of courage“ – I thought he was referring to getting up and playing in front of folk, but he cleared that up „No, I mean to ruin a song by the great Tim Buckley, that must take a lot of courage“. I explained to him that I’d never heard Tim Buckley’s version of ‚Song To The Siren‘ and that as far as I was concerned I was ruining a This Mortal Coil track. At this he became flustered and left. He returned later that night asking for my autograph, which confused me somewhat.“

    6. Moving Up Country, Roaring The Gospel

(James‘ first 7″ single, on Bad Jazz records)

It’s Jesus in the morning and there’s colour in your cheeks

„This was the track that Mr Peel played, that first got me signed to Bad Jazz, which led me to Domino records. It was recorded on my dusty old 4-track way back when, and it sounds like it. Pure dead braw as a craw.“

    8. Blue Bleezin‘ Blind Drunk

(From the vinyl only Sweet Jesus EP)

Oh friends I have a sad story, a sad sad tale to tell

„This is a song I learned from the singing of Cilla Fisher. Her version is far superior, though. I recorded this with Kenny King Creosote, on a freezing day in the Fence Records offices, which are basically a semi derelict fisherman’s dwelling by the Cellardyke harbour. It was very cold and tea was drunk to warm fingers.“

    9. Sleep Is The Jewel

    (Previously unreleased)

The lengths I go to, to reach my lover’s arms, to wake in my lover’s arms

„We recorded this for Just Beyond The River, but it was left out. Why? Too poppy. It didn’t fit in well with the feel of the rest of that album. Faisal (drums) was pretending he was in Neu! and the rest of us were just pretending we could keep up.“

    10.Are You Coming Home tonight?

(B-side of Moving Up Country debut 7″)

If I had an ace up my sleeve please believe I’d have played it by now

„We were just experimenting with sounds around this time. Throwing banjos together with Fender Rhodes and trombone didn’t feel particularly odd. Why should it? They’re all just nice noises, working together. It’s a pop song, plain and simple“

    11.The Lang Toun

(The nine minute plus and utterly unique debut JY release for Domino.)

And the grandmother’s shouting, she’s on the floor in the dark

„I wrote this whilst walking over the Edinburgh meadows one early morning just after the festival had finished and everyone had gone home. I didn’t really expect anyone to like it – songs about domestic violence don’t have a habit of tearing up the charts – and we were pretty haphazard with its recording. But, for some reason, it was the track that pricked up the Domino ears, and our debut single for them.“

    12. La Magnifica

(From the vinyl only Sweet Jesus EP)

To move, like a wreck, to the neuk

„Kenny and I recorded this the same day we did Blue Bleezin‘ Blind Drunk. It was the first song I’d written since Moving Up Country had been released, which had sucked me into a whirlwind of high society and A-list parties. The song basically says – shall we go home now?“

Schade, denn ich hätte mir etwas mehr unveröffentlichtes oder neues Material gewünscht. So sind es nur drei unbekannte Tracks.

Hey man, why don't we make a tune... just playin' the melody, not play the solos...
