Das kann nicht sein, es war umgekehrt! Endlich finde ich zum früheren Duke, zum Glück hatte ich die Zeit.

Irgendwann mittendrin habe ich dann Lust auf Coltrane bekommen, „Crescent“, warum auch immer, aber dann wieder mit aufgestülpten Ohren zurück.

Chatterbox? So hiess der Nachtclub im William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, in dem Count Basie Anfangs 1937 auftrat (und fürs Radio mitgeschnitten wurde).

Warum bloss hab ich die seit Jahren nicht mehr gehört? Davon abgesehen war – neben den Aufnahmen mit Mingus – „Tears for Dolphy“ meine grosse Curson (und Ervin) Entdeckung, vor vielen Jahren … daneben sind „The New Thing and the Blue Thing“ und „Pop Wine“ wohl meine Lieblingsalben, ich kenne beide aber wesentlich weniger lang. „Cattin‘ Curson“, die zweite Marge-Scheibe, ist auch sehr lohnenswert. Um den Rest der Aufnahmen mit Barron muss ich mich mal kümmern, das meisten habe ich schon gehört, Fresh Sound hat ja kürzlich ein tolles 2CD-Set herausgebracht und hat zudem auch das 1963er Audio Fidelity-Album Now Hear This! im Angebot. Die älteren Denon/Savoy-Ausgaben, wo vorhanden, wären sicher wesentlich besser, aber ich glaube, hier muss ich gelegentlich zu Fresh Sound greifen.

Darius Jones – Big Gurl (Smell My Dream) und Black Music Disaster von Matthew Shipp (farfisa), J Spaceman und John Coxon (elg) sowie Steve Noble (d).
Darius Jones vermag mich nicht richtig zu überzeugen. Schöner Sound am Altsax, gewiss viel Talent und Leidenschaft, aber die Verbindung aus Tradition (sein Altsax ist *sehr* traditionell, da klingt die ganze Linie von JMac bis zu Kenny Garrett an, die gelegentlichen Ausbrüche in unkonventionelle Spielweise ungeachtet, die ich überdies manchmal etwas unorganisch hergeführt fand) und „neuem“ überzeugt mich nur halbwegs – das mag auch an der Rhythmusgruppe liegen, die mir nicht recht gefallen mag. Vielleicht ist Jones zu sehr Jazz und die Rhythmusgruppe zuwenig?
Aber Jones scheint mir definitiv ein Musiker zu sein, auf den man achten sollte!Die „Black Music Distaster“ aber – holy shit! Die Scheibe ist phantastisch!

Freut mich, dass Du Dir beide Alben angehört hast. Die „Big Gurl“ höre ich ja deutlich stärker als Du, mich begeistert gerade auch die Rhythmusgruppe sehr. Anders als Du empfinde ich das Zusammenspiel als ausgesprochen organisch und Jones Ton, diese leicht schlierigen Linien, die für mich immer zugänglich bleiben, hat es mir einfach angetan.„Black Music Disaster“ – ja, nach der brauch ich auch immer erstmal ein Sauerstoffzelt… Die andere Shipp-Scheibe aus diesem Jahr, „Elastic Aspects“ ist übrigens auch sehr gut geworden, wenn auch nicht so brachial-überwältigend.
