The Prestige Records Story (1949-1971 / 4 CD Box Set)
Vor Jahren mal günstig erworben aber allein aufgrund der schieren Masse an Musik kaum mal komplett gehört. Habe mir heute mal eine Short Version zusammengestellt und die ist immer noch mehr als 1 1/2 Stunden lang. Der Labelname Prestige klingt in meinen Ohren zwar irgendwie immer wie eine Kosmetikmarke aus der DDR ;-), aber die Musik ist über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Gut 2 Jahrzehnte Jazz im Schnelldurchlauf von Lenny Tristano über Sonny Stift, Gene Ammons, Miles, Monk, MJQ, Gil Evans, Coltrane, Dolphy, Kirk und Shirley Scott bis zu George Benson. Von Bop über Hard Bop, Free knapp gesteift, eine bisschen alte Schule à la Coleman Hawkins bis zu Soul Jazz. Sehr unterhaltsam.

DDR und Prestige Records: Mit 1949 haben sie tatsächlich das gleiche Gründungsjahr. Aber Bob Weinstock hat sein Label bereits 1971 verkauft, während die DDR erst viele Jahre später zur Konkurrenz überlief.
Auf der Box bekommt man auch so was übercooles zu hören: Willis Jackson with Jack McDuff – This’ll Get To Ya.

Ob sie besser wäre, wenn alle Willis Jackson hören würden? Ich möchte seine Prestige-Alben jedenfalls nicht missen! Nachher höre ich noch etwas hieraus (fürs Ganze wird mein Atem nicht mehr reichen):
