Pinch, Mantra ist gut. Mir scheint auch, dass es von der Textform her ein Haiku ist. Nur bin ich im „englische-Silbenzählen“ nicht besonders fit.
Jedenfalls kommt es ziemlich genau hin, von den gesungenen her. Ja, der Track hat schon was und auch mich schon immer fasziniert.--

Haiku vs. Mantra vs. Song vs. Track
Wo ist hier eigentlich deine Liste mit liebsten Dylan-Songs, otis? Würde ich gerne lesen.--

Was es damit auf sich hat? Ich liebe diesen Song. Ehrlich! Der gehört bei mir immer mit rein in eine Beste-Dylan-Songs-Auflistung. Und ebenso selbstverständlich bewegt er sich dann immer unter den ersten 20 oder 25 Nennungen. „All the tired horses in the sun – how am I supposed to get any writing done?“ – dazu diese kleine grandiose Melodie, auf welcher sich der Text zum Mantra formt (das ganze Stück besteht nur aus diesem Refrain) und dann auch noch nicht mal selber gesungen, sondern vom Engelschor persönlich! So fantastisch wie subtil! Das Stück ist wirklich etwas ganz Besonderes. Kann man sicher auch als Witz oder evtl. als kultige Schrulligkeit o.ä. abtun, aber darum gehts nicht. Und vorschnelles Abwinken bringt einen hier schlicht um 3 wundervolle Minuten magischer Musik.Zunächst ist das eine wirklich tolle Liste. Wie Du liebe ich auch die großen, epischen Dylan-Songs wie „Desolation Row“, „Visions“ oder „Idiot Wind“. Gegen Ende gehen unsere Meinungen dann etwas auseinander. „Dirge“, naja.
Aber Deine Interpretation des Textes von „All The Tired Horses“ beinhaltet die großartigsten „misheard lyrics“ aller Zeiten. Naja, „misheard Lyrics“ schön und gut. Aber eigentlich ist das so neu nun auch nicht, denn: Phonetisch kommts erstens sehr exakt hin und ist überdies so naheliegend: nämlich dass nix mehr geht und funktionieren will/mag. Als Sinnbild für einen Stillstand so einfach wie einleuchtend wie clever. So wie dem ganzen „Self Portrait“-Album mehr auch eine Ohnmacht denn eine Verweigerung innewohnt und dann auch wieder nicht.
Heinrich Detering hat, was „All The Tired Horses“ angeht, eine gute Umschreibung jenes vermeintlichen Verhörers geliefert: „Metapoetischer Kalauer“. Diese Zweideutigkeit (riding/writing) machts letztlich auch noch mal extra. Ob von BD so beabsichtigt oder nicht (ich tippe auf Ersteres), wäre eine singuläre Lesart jener Zeilen hier aber sehr bedauerlich und sogar reichlich doof. Und Ambivalenzen jeglicher Art sollte man nie leichtfertig unter den Tisch fallen lassen. --
Es mag sein, dass Dylan seine Ohnmacht auf Self Portrait nur mit einer Verweigerungshaltung kaschiert hat. Als zweideutigen Kalauer würde ich den Song auch interpretieren. Ob man gerade in einen solchen Song zuviel hineininterpretieren sollte, wage ich aber zu bezweiflen. Aber es kommt ja sowieso immer darauf an, was der Hörer daraus macht, oder?

Natürlich. Überkontextualisierungen/Überinterpretationen sind stets dämlich, finden hier jedoch nicht statt, weil die Vorlage („All The Tired Horses“) schon entsprechend kurz, knackig und treffend ist.

Bei Dylan werde ich mir vielleicht einmal die Mühe machen; schwer genug wird es.
Die Horses werden es wohl dennoch nicht in die 20 schaffen, dafür vielleicht z.B. Billy. Aber es mag dauern damit.
Was die Lesart „writing“ anbelangt, so mag sie auf der Basis der Haiku-Form eindeutig zu favorisieren sein. Ich hatte es zwar bis vor einiger Zeit phonetisch nie so gehört, aber inhaltlich irgendwie immer so interpretiert. Und so etwas dann als Opener einer heiß erwarteten neuen Dylan-LP, „Self Portrait“! Vielleicht sollte ich doch **** geben. Das Album ist definitiv unterschätzt.--
