Viele (die meisten) Leute wissen gar nicht den Unterschied.
Zwischen Zug- und Ventilposaune.--
Free Jazz doesn't seem to care about getting paid, it sounds like truth. (Henry Rollins, Jan. 2013)Eigentlich gehört die Ventilposaune ja auch zu den überflüssigen Instrumenten (redbeans meint, die Posaune überhaupt, aber er irrt… eines Tages wird er’s auch noch merken).
Brookmeyer hatte aber auf der glatteren, weniger ruppigen Ventilposaune einen Sound, der so lebendig und vokal war, wie ihn wohl viele Zugposaunisten auch gerne hingekriegt hätten.
Für mich ein ganz grosser – allein schon, wenn man sich die Bands vor Augen führt, in denen er als Sideman gewirkt hatte: im Quartett, Sextett und besonders der Concert Jazz Band von Gerry Mulligan, in Jimmy Giuffres Trio, später mit der Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band, auch immer wieder mit Stan Getz. Und zwischendurch hat er auch unter eigenem Namen hervorragende Aufnahmen gemacht, es sei davon bloss „Traditionalism Revisited“ erwähnt!
