Daptone Records wurde von Gabriel Roth (musikalischer Kopf der Dap-Kings) und Neal Sugarman vor 6 Jahren ins Leben gerufen, um in erster Linie als Label für Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings zu fungieren. Neben einigen famosen Sharon Jones Singles sind aber auch wunderbare Soul Perlen anderer Künstler wie beispielsweise Chalres Bradley erschienen.

Soeben ist mit „What Have You Done?“ die 36. Single erschienen, die für mich zu den bisherigen Single Highlights in diesem Jahr gehört. Eine famose gospel-inspirierte Hymne von Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens:

My favourite 45s and LPs of all time.

Letzten Herbst habe ich mich mit Roth u.a. über die Label-Philosophie unterhalten und erfahren, daß Daptone tatsächlich gute Umsätze erzielt, vor allem mit Singles (fast 50.000 waren da schon weg). Mein Bedauern darüber, daß sie sehr schmuck- und lieblos unter die Leute gebracht werden, konnte er zwar nachvollziehen, meinte aber, die meisten würden ohnehin in Jukeboxes und in den Kisten von DJs landen. Pic-Sleeves wären da völlig obsolet. Mein Vorschlag, von jeder Single eine limitierte Auflage (500) mit PS für ein paar Cent mehr anzubieten, fand er immerhin „worth considering“. Er habe davor eigentlich nie darüber nachgedacht. Erstaunlich.

Limitierte Picture-Sleeves halte ich für eine sehr interessante Idee. Aufgrund der tollen Gestaltung der Label und einem ausgeprägtem Stilbewusstsein traue ich ihnen auch ein Händchen für gelungene Single-Cover zu.

Einer der Sharon Jones-CDs lag eine Stunde der „GhettoFunkPowerHour“ bei, aus einer Radio Show, die Binky Griptite (der Gitarrist der Dap-Kings) macht.
legaler Download – eine ganze Stunde. Dadurch angefixt habe ich alles gekauft, was zu haben war.

Am 15. Oktober erscheint der erste Longplayer der Menahan Street Band, einer Art Label Allstar Band. Die bisherigen Singles waren allesamt sehr vielversprechend. Ich bin jedenfalls sehr gespannt auf das Album.

Daptone
The Menahan Street Band is a collaboration of musicians from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, El Michels Affair, Antibalas and the Budos Band, brought together by musician/producer Thomas Brenneck (Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Budos Band, Amy Winehouse) to record hits in the bedroom of his Menahan St. apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. With influences reaching beyond the funk/soul/afrobeat architecture of their other projects into the more ethereal realms of Curtis Mayfield and Mulatu Astatke, the Menahan Street Band creates a unique new instrumental soul sound that is as raw as it is lush. Their debut album, Make the Road by Walking will be released on Dunham Records, Brenneck’s new imprint of Daptone Records, a joint venture devoted to bringing the Menahan Street sound from Brenneck’s bedroom out into the world.

Hat sich bezüglich der Sleeves eigentlich etwas getan? Oder immer noch weiße Papierhüllen?

PS: Habe gerade mal durchgezählt, habe von den 36 Singles immerhin 15, werde mich demnächst mal an eine Besternung wagen.
