Camera Obscura – New Album

Camera Obscura announce a new single, the forthcoming album release of My Maudlin Career (out on April 20th 2009) and tour dates in both the UK and US. They are also making the title track available to download as of today.
With John Peel as an early champion, Glasgow’s Camera Obscura are fondly regarded by many as one of the UK’s finest acts; having built up over the years a dedicated following with must-have records and tours throughout Europe, USA, Mexico, Australia and South East Asia. Their last album, Let’s Get Out Of This Country (2006), was to prove pivotal for the band, taking them out of the shadows and to long-deserved new heights. “You might not find heartache as enchanting as this anywhere else,” stated All Music Guide in a familiar glowing review.
Nearly three years on from that release and Camera Obscura are ready to release the follow-up, My Maudlin Career; their first for 4AD and fourth overall. After his successful touches on their last record, they returned to Sweden to work again with producer Jari Haapalainen (Ed Harcourt, Peter, Bjorn & John, The Concretes). His wonderful understanding with the band continues to flourish, again fully realising not just the potential of Tracyanne Campbell’s songs and remarkable voice, but also the ensemble musicianship of the group as a whole.
Speaking for the first time about My Maudlin Career, lead singer Tracyanne Campbell commented, „Some people who have heard it say it’s intense and quite dark. I suppose it is in a way. We were even more open and brave when making it than we were with the last record. I’ve never been so brutal when its come to writing lyrics. I wouldn’t even call them lyrics. Just documentation of what was going on with me for a while. I truly believe it’s the best we’ve done so far.“

Als Single wird allerdings „French Navy“ angkündigt. Bin gespannt, ob das ein würdiger „Lloyd“-Nachfolger sein wird.

‚My Maudlin Career‘ schallt ununterbrochen durch meine Wohnung und reiht sich schon jetzt hinter ‚If Looks Could Kill‘ in die Liste meiner liebsten Tracks ein. Ich sehe ihn mal als qualitativen Vorboten des Albums und freue mich somit ungemein.

Mir kommt es nach dem ersten Hören leicht zahnlos vor. Alles sanft und wattig, die Produktion recht verschlossen und wenig dynamisch, die Songs konturenloser als ich sie vom ersten Album in Erinnerung habe. Aber alles sehr schön anhörbar, keine Frage.--
FAVOURITESAlso kanntest du bisher nur „Biggest Blue Hi Fi“ ? Sie klangen ja schon auf den Alben zwei und drei etwas sanfter und harmonieseeliger, finde ich.

FAVOURITESAch so, ok. Stilistisch fand ich das Debut wirklich „anders“. Aber wenn du die neue noch „sanfter“ hörst als „Let’s Get Out“ bin ich ja mal gespannt

Wie „If Looks Could Kill“ auf der letzten Platte hebt sich der Titletrack „My Maudlin Career“ vom Rest des Albums ab, was meine Euphorie ob der restlichen Songs anfänglich dämpfte. Es ist wieder ein schön anzuhörendes Werk geworden, nur leider nicht mehr so zwingend wie die früheren. Okay, „You Told A Lie“ ist romantisch-traurig und wirklich ergreifend, ebenso der dunkle Abschiedssong „James“, „The Sweetest Thing“ überzeugt mit schönem Streicherarrangement und ist catchy. Aber vielen Tracks fehlt der letzte Biss. Nicht das es plätschern würde, aber mit dem vierten Album hab ich mir schon etwas mehr Esprit gewünscht, vielleicht mit größeren Risiken im Songwriting.
Traceyanne Campbell bleibt dennoch eine First Lady mit ihrer einer Traumwelt entsprungenden Stimme, die noch im Schmerz tröstend wirkt und ihrer einzigartigen Qualität Songs zwischen Anspruch, Dramaturgie und Dream-Pop zu entwerfen. Und möglicherweise ist es auch einfach nur eine Platte für den Herbst und ich lege sie beizeiten wieder verstärkter auf. Wenn die Blätter auf nasse Straßen fallen und das abendliche Rot im Einklang zur sehnenden Seele des Hörers steht.--
