Bradford kommen nicht aus Bradford („North of Manchester“), sondern aus Blackburn. Wenn man nach Bradford, Blackburn und music googelt, erzielt man keine geeigneten Treffer. Erst wenn man „Band“ durch „music“ ersetzt.
Es wird gemunkelt, dass sie damals fünf Jahre zu früh (Britpop) oder fünf Jahre zu spät (The Smiths) gewesen sein könnten, um ein größeres Publikum zu finden.Das brillante, von Stephen Street produzierte, aber damals relativ wenig beachtete Album Shouting Quietly erschien 1990. Lange Zeit soll es kaum zu bekommen gewesen sein. (Ich kannte es nicht. Die Band aber auch nicht.) Seit 9. Februar gibt es dieses als 30-Tracks-Edition mit allen Lyrics im Booklet auf CD oder als Limited Edition Double Vinyl (37 von 500 sind offenbar noch erhältlich) und Download [A Turntable Friend Records].
Sänger und Songschreiber Ian H. heute [im Booklet]: „Getting to know him (Morrissey) […] was brilliant as he is truly one of our finest and most precious eccentrics – and I say that with all warmth. He gave me my finest hour – hearing a song [„Skin Storm“] I’d written sung by him, recorded and released as a record. Enough said.“

Ich habe nur Gang of one vom Album Shouting quietly (Rough Trade Sampler), und das fand ich großartig.
Kommt sofort auf die Mussichsoforthaben-Liste.

l'enfer c'est les autres...„Gang of One“ hat mich auch gleich gepackt. „Greed and Peasant Land“, „Lust Roulette“, „Radio Edna“ und „Gary’s Going Down“ zähle ich auch zu meinen Favoriten. Aber eigentlich sind alle Songs auf dem Album ausgezeichnet. Die Demos klingen (natürlich) etwas unfertiger und rauer, trotzdem sehr charmant und unbedingt hörenswert.

Benannt habe ich mich nach der Gang of Four; dass der Username noch einen zweiten Verweis enthält, ist mir erst hinterher aufgefallen – aber es gefällt mir natürlich.

They sound like classic Elvis Costello and the Attractions“ (AMG); ja? Dann muss ich mich wohl doch mal wieder an Elvis Costello heranwagen. Hatte zwar ziemlich viel gehört (vor 10 Jahren), aber so richtig begeistert hat er mich (bisher) trotzdem nicht.
Ich bin von Bradford jetzt eher via Jasmine Minks und Railway Children gen Riverside gelangt. (Und zwischendurch immer wieder zurück zu Bradford.) Auch schön.

Blackburn five-piece Bradford were once hailed as natural successors to The Smiths by none other than Stephen Patrick Morrissey himself. Indeed, Morrissey covered their 1988 debut single ‚Skin Storm‘ as the B-side to ‚Pregnant For The Last Time‘ as well as occasionally including it in his live sets.
Their self-titled debut came out in 1988 to a rapturous reception from all corners of the music press but it was 1990’s follow up Shouting Quietly that established them as one of the most intelligent, politically charged outfits to emerge from the post-C86 indie scene. Produced by Stephen Street and released on his Foundation label, the album receives an overdue reissue entitled Thirty Years Of Shouting Quietly courtesy of A Turntable Friend Records next month (9th February) and comprising of thirty songs including the original LP, the extremely rare French mini-album which was withdrawn by their former label Midnight Music prior to release, and several previously unreleased songs.
Here, singer and songwriter in chief Ian Michael Hodgson talks us through each of the songs that make up their critically acclaimed second record.

Eigentlich Debüt-Album, weil die 1988er Veröffentlichung ja eher eine Sammlung einzelner (Demo-)Tracks war, trotzdem schöner Artikel.

Ich höre da gesanglich durchaus etwas Costello.--

Ich glaube der Gesang primär war’s bei Bradford nämlich nicht, der mich aufhorchen ließ. Eher die etwas rauhe Gesamt-Attitüde, die auf sehr poetische, bildhafte, lebendige Sprache und Melodieseligkeit trifft. (Und musikalisch variantenreiches Können.) Kitchen-Sink in Farbe. Ein wenig wie bei den Smiths. Nur dass ich bei den Smiths keine (oder kaum) Punk-Attitüde wahrnehme. Bradford sind irgendwie Punk, ohne Punk zu sein. Vielleicht fehlte mir das bei Costello.
