gypsy tail wind(dass Woody Shaw im ekstatischen „Zuri Dance“ auf „Cirrus“ laut schreit, ist keine Überraschung … die Story dazu im Booklet ist etwas krass hinsichtlich des Endes, das er später nahm).
was ist denn die story dazu? versuche es auch gerade mal wieder mit CIRRUS, das mich nie recht begeistern konnte (vor allem land finde ich da ungewohnt müde), aber „zuri dance“ ist ganz toll, da gerät hutcherson ja fast in trance in seinem solo (diese art von intensität kenne ich von keinem anderen vibraphonisten/ marimbaspieler).
Aus den Liner Notes von Richard Seidel, der sich mit Hutcherson unterhalten hat (und Seidel – oder das Lektorat – kriegt das mit den Anführungszeichen überhaupt nicht gebacken, was folgt ist ein Zitat, aber nur am Ende als solches markiert):
Woody got excited while we were playing it, and he started screaming out. It was really unexpected and I remember I got upset. After the record date we went back to the hotel. We were all there and we ordered dinner. And I said ‚Woody, you shouldn’t have yelled out on the tape like that.‘ He said ‚Are you guys mad at me?‘ We said, ‚yeah, we’re real mad at you.‘ So then he says in a moaning tone ‚I feel like killing myself, I’m gonna jump out of the window.‘ I turned and said ‚Woody, we’re on the first floor.‘ And then Larry Hancock says ‚Woody if you do jump, can I eat your sandwich that you just ordered?'“
Ob Shaw vor die U-Bahn gestürzt ist oder sich gestürzt hat, wird wohl nie geklärt, aber daran dachte Hutcherson wohl gerade nicht, als er das zum Besten gab.
