The Lemonheads release their first album in ten years, The Lemonheads through Vagrant / Polydor on Monday 25th September.
For The Lemonheads eighth album Dando convened two of his early influences — the unholy duo of drummer Bill Stevenson (Descendents, Black Flag) and bassist Karl Alvarez (Descendents) — in a remote Rocky Mountain hideaway.
Dando and Stevenson co-produced the album, and Stevenson wrote or co-wrote three of its eleven songs; long-time Australian collaborator Tom Morgan added another two. There’s also cameos galore: from wunderkind bassist Josh Lattanzi (Poughkeepsie, Rule of Three & In Passing), certifiable rock giant Garth Hudson (The Band, who plays keyboards on Black Gown and December), and some real foot-on-monitor guitar work by Dinosaur JR’s J. Mascis (No Backbone & Steve’s Boy).
You can think of the new album as a Best of the Lemonheads Volume II, featuring songs from the band’s greatest era that didn’t quite yet exist, played a little louder and little faster. “You should listen to the Descendents‘ [1982] Milo Goes to College to get an idea of what the next Lemonheads record sounds like”, says Evan of his newly reformed band. „I wanted to make a rock record, a melodic rock record.” And more to the point, “Also, I’m sick of selling solo T-shirts.“
As previously announced the Lemonheads play at the Latitude Festival in Southwold on July 14th and at Somerset House on July 16th.
The Lemonheads have released seven albums: Hate Your Friends (1987), Creator (1988), Lick (1989), Lovey (1990), It’s a Shame About Ray (1992), Come On Feel The Lemonheads (1993), Car Button Cloth (1996).
Evan Dando released his highly acclaimed solo album Baby I’m Bored (2003).
