Als Zweites hören wir ein Ausschnitt aus George Russells Meisterwerk „Jazz in the Space Age“, den ersten Teil von „Chromatic Universe“ (die drei Teile umrahmen auf dem Album drei weitere Stücke). Der Opener des Albums präsentiert nach einem sphärischen Intro die Pianisten Bill Evans (den Hauptsolisten des Albums) und Paul Bley im freien Zwiegespräch über einem ungewöhnlichen Groove (Milt Hinton-b, Don Lamond-d). Die Improvisation ist weder durch Akkorde oder Skalen noch durch eine Melodie vorbestimmt, einzig der Bass gibt eine tonale Vorlage, der 5/2-Beat einen rhythmischen Rahmen.
Russell: „Tonally and rhythmically out in space, they were not victim to the tyranny of the chord or a particular meter. In essence, this is musical relativism. Everything can be right. The idea takes over. They worked in the realm of ideas, projecting one upon the other. This is panchromatic improvisation.“ – für 1958 ein aussergewöhnliches Stück!
