Jay McShanns Band aus Kansas City hörten wir schon gegen Ende der letzten Sendung – Charlie Parker machte mit McShann seine ersten Aufnahmen und seine wenigen Soli mit McShann wirken noch heute frisch und überraschend. Die Band rifft mit Verve, während die Rhythmusgruppe, vor allem Drummer Harold „Doc“ West, einen leicht schleppenden Beat zu spielen scheint – doch Gene Rameys Bass ist genau da, wo er hingehört.
Die Soli stammen von McShann, Bob Mabane, Bird, Orville Minor und Lawrence Anderson – und Bird wirkt zwar keinesfalls wie von einem anderen Planeten, doch es wird sofort klar, dass das hier eine neue Stimme ist, wie man sie nur sehr selten entdecken kann.
