Ska – The sound of young Jamaica
Ska was born when Jamaican musicians mixed American jazz and rhythm & blues with a host of indigenous musical influences to create a vibrant new dance music. When Jamaica gained independence from British colonial rule in 1962 it was ska that was the soundtrack to young Jamaica, ruling both the dancehalls and airwaves. Soon records by top ska producers Duke Reid and Clement Dodd would cross the Atlantic, courtesy of the UK’s burgeoning West Indian community and as demand increased for this music ska was soon being released on specialist British record label such as Blue Beat, Ska Beat and most famously, Island, set up by young Anglo- Jamaican entrepreneur, Chris Blackwell.
CD 1 features the anthems from this heady period when Jamaican ska was becoming recognized around the world.
