THE LONG RYDERS – Looking For Lewis & Clark [7″; Island, 1985] * * * * 1/2
„Rock“, zum Dritten. So langsam geht mir die Puste aus, hahaha!
Die Bekanntschaft mit den Long Ryders verdanke ich der „Americana-Meilensteine“-Liste des deutschen RS (2002), in der ihr zweites Album „State Of Our Union“ (1985) berücksichtigt wurde.
Es dauerte dann aber noch einige Jahre, bis ich eine Platte der Band aufgetrieben hatte. Nicht dass diese sonderlich rar wären, aber es hat sich halt nicht sofort ergeben. Ich kaufte „Union“ vor etwa fünf Jahren und war sofort begeistert vom Album-Opener „Looking For Lewis & Clark“ – und ich redete mir ein, Sid Griffin sänge ein Lob- und Sehnsuchtslied auf Jerry Lee Lewis und Gene Clark.
Ein Glück, dass „Looking For Lewis & Clark“ – übrigens nicht der einzige famose Album-Track, man höre „Mason-Dixon Line“, den quasi-Title-Track oder auch „Two Kinds Of Love“ – auch als Single veröffentlicht wurde, denn auf dem Front-Cover befinden sich folgende Liner Notes:
„Meriwether Lewis and Wiliam Clark left St. Louis on 14 May 1804, under President Thomas Jefferson’s authorisation, to explore the newly-purchased Louisiana Territory and to seek a North-West Passage by water. […]“
Abenteurer! Entdecker!
Passend zur lyrischen Inspirationsquelle galoppiert die Rhythmus-Gitarre ins staubige Country-Rock-Gelände, heult die Band „Werewolves Of London“-zitierend und lässt die Mundharmonika schnaufen. Sid Griffin schickt via Tim Hardin einen Gruß an sein Idol Gram Parsons und Country-Rock becomes the new Classic Rock in the eighties.
