Darf ich als Nachgeborener das so kitschig und ganz aufrichtig sagen? Ja? Okay.
Schon die weithin bekannten Hits jener Ära lassen ja die Ohren leuchten: „Holidays In The Sun“, „Teenage Kicks“, „Going Underground“, „X-Offender“ usw. usf.
Sobald ich jedoch eine mir unbekannte 7″ aus den Jahren 1977 bis 1982 (+/- zwei Jahre) sehe, blüht schon die Fantasie auf, welche Traum-45 nun meine Sammlung bereichern könnte. Neulich war es Bill Nelsons „Do You Dream In Colour?“, davor Singles von Martha & The Muffins, Local Operator und Judy Nylon.
Mein bisheriger 7″-Favorit aus 1979 ist „The Sound Of The Suburbs“ von The Members – das mir im Erwerbszeitpunkt jedoch nicht unbekannt war, schließlich wurde diese 45 im „Punk“-Special des deutschen RS im Jahre 2003 vorgestellt.
„Suburbs“ klingt wie die Schnittmenge aus Power-Pop und Dire Straits. Wirklich. Die Dynamik ist unerhört und nahezu unbeschreiblich: catchy, aber verschachtelt; stürmisch, aber mit Finesse; die Lead Vocals gelegentlich prollig, die Backing Vocals etwas verschmitzt. Absolut unwiderstehlich.
