DAVID BOWIE – Ashes To Ashes [7″; RCA, 1980] * * * * *
Klang David Bowie auf einem seiner Songs schon einmal so traurig wie auf jener Single, die Vorbote seiner ’80er-LP „Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)“ war? Blöde Frage, entschuldigt. Aber genau dieser Gedanke schoss mir just wieder durch den Kopf, als ich die 7″ zwecks Besprechung/Vorstellung/Würdigung erneut auflegte.
Doch um auf die Eingangsfrage zurückzukommen:
Ja, tat er. Warum auch nicht? „Quicksand“ fällt mir nach kurzem Brainstorming ein, „Five Years“ sicher ebenfalls. Und dennoch erwischt mich „Ashes To Ashes“ immer wieder aufs neue, mit seinem fröstelnden Unterton. Ach was: „Unterton“! Das Frösteln, die Beklemmung und die Totenstarre, die aus „Ashes To Ashes“ strömen, sind unausweichlich:
„Oh no, don’t say it’s true…“
Doch, doch:
„Ashes to ashes/Funk to funky/
We know Major Tom’s a junkie/
Strung out in heavens high/
Hitting an all-time low…“
Seufz.
„I’ve never done good things/
I’ve never done bad things/
I never did anything out of the blue…“
Nicht einmal Letzteres kann er sich eingestehen, der Thin White Duke. Das Chamäleon (eine These übrigens, die von Konrad Heidkamp widerlegt wurde), der Eklektiker, Mr.-Hunky-Ziggy-Berlin-Earthling.
