Eine wüste Attacke, mit Singles-untypischer Laufzeit (insgesamt fast acht Minuten!).
Daher auf 7″, wie schon bei Dylans „Like A Rolling Stone“, auf zwei etwa gleichlange Cuts verteilt. Dieser Song thematisiert Paranoia, Überdruss und Endzeit-Fantasien. Costello verstaut im atemlosen stream-of-consciousness-Wahn Bilder vom „cheap korean monster-movie scenery“, KKK-Anhänger „wear hoods and carry shotguns/In the main streets of Montgomery“, die Girls bieten letztlich auch nur „a million false seductions“.
Der Grund: „What do we care/If the world is a joke?/We’re only living this instant.“
Und während The Attractions dazu toben, poltern, höhnen und übersprudeln, schließt Costello im fiesen Finale: „We’ve always been like worlds apart/Now you’re seeing two nightmares collide.“
Absolutely uncanny, to say the least.

Der Oasis-Split im Jahre 2009 war natürlich alles andere als überraschend, soviel brüderlicher Hass und Geltungsbedürfnis mussten irgendwann auch die robustesten Männer scheiden. Der ältere Gallagher-Bruder atmete tief durch, holte sich abermals Dave Sardy als Produzent ins Boot – und entwarf den Fluchtplan:
„You can’t fight the feeling/Falling from above/You can’t stop the bleeding/Sing to yourself and hold on!!“
Die Streicher und Geister-Chöre überhöhen dramatisch, der Beat swingt unaufdringlich, die Coda überwältigt mich jedes Mal. Hang in there, Noel!
