I spotted Alan Vega, the lead singer of Suicide, making his way towards me. I didn’t know if he was going to be friendly or hostile. Alan is a really great guy, and I was always a fan, but he seemed to have a bee in his bonnet about Soft Cell, even though we always acknowledged Suicide as being the first synth duo. ‚Hey, those Soft Cell guys ripped us off and stole our ideas‘, he said in the press. At first I had felt angry over what he said, and once stormed past him in the Gramercy Park, ignoring him. But now we had reconciled our differences.

Marc Almond hat seine Autobiographie schon mit Anfang 40 geschrieben. Da hat er Gelegenheit 40 Jahre später noch einen zweiten Teil nachzulegen. 
Ich kann Alan Vegas Gram sogar nachvollziehen. Er und Martin Rev sind vom kommerziellen Erfolg ja nicht gerade verwöhnt worden, während andere später mit einem ähnlichen Konzept viel Geld verdienten. Aber dafür gibt es sicher eine Vielzahl von Gründen. Soft Cell als einen Rip Off von Suicide zu brandmarken, ist jedenfalls allzu einfach. Gemeinsamkeiten gibt es bestimmt, aber bei Soft Cell kommen dann doch noch ein paar Eigenheiten dazu, die sicher auch für deren enormen Erfolg maßgeblich waren. Zunächst Almonds und Balls Leidenschaft für Northern Soul, dann Marc Almonds Begeisterung für theatralische Divas wie Liza Minelli und beider Fähigkeit, daraus in Verbindung mit Elektronik umwerfende Pop Songs zu schaffen. Aber ich schweife ab.
Weiß wirklich keiner, in welchem sehr erfolgreichen Pop Song von 1982 Johnnie Ray ebenfalls erwähnt wird? Und kennt keiner COLLISION DRIVE und hat Lust, was dazu zu schreiben?
