Castellans Folk Sommer Festival, Hörstel, Germany.
It’s not a good thing to start a tour with a day off. Just ask the birthday boys, Brendan and Chris, who celebrated till the early morning. Or is that late morning.
Anyway it was a long drive to Hörstel, at least time-wise, as the Autobahn seems to be kaputt. There was roadwork everywhere, and it felt like we were stuck in the worst rush hour ever.
We got to the festival site much later than we were supposed to, so we didn’t get a proper soundcheck, just a quick line-check before the gig. Not the best option, but what can you do?
The site was really nice, like an island in a canal. It felt small but very intimate. Most outdoor festivals are in big areas and if there’s not enough people they feel empty.
A quick trip to our hotel to freshen up, and then back to the festival site.
The first band of the night was already playing when we got there. They were called Good Night Folks and they played a lot of traditional Irish songs and a few German songs as well. Anyway the audience liked it and a good time was had by all.
While we set our stuff up, the audience were entertained by MacPiet, who played bagpipes and guitar, and then there was a dance troupe after that. MacPiet informed everybody that there was over 2000 people at the festival, which made the small island crowded.
We hit the stage as we usually do, bang on with no safety net. We played a very long set, close to 90 minutes and gave a few new songs a premier airing as well. We also had Dutch Irish Bastard on accordion for the last couple of songs. The crowd seemed to enjoy themselves, we certainly had a great time on stage. Just before the encore we got the whole crowd to sing for the birthday boys and for Karin as well, who has her birthday tomorrow. A few songs and it was time to bid farewell.
A few well deserved beers and then we could enjoy Firkin, who were the last band on. We were chatting with friends both old and new when all of a sudden a thunder storm blew up. It started pissing down rain and Firkin had to stop playing, poor lads. And girl. A very sour and wet ending of a nice day. Then we just waited for the downpour to stop so we could load our stuff into the van.
Thanks to the staff who really took care of us, and all the nice people we met.
