Ein toller Posaunist, der lange Jahre bei Ellington gespielt hat. Als Leader hat er gerade mal zwei Alben gemacht, Slide Trombone für Verve (eine Session mit einer R&B-Band mit Sam „The Man“ Taylor am Tenorsax, eine zweite mit Ellingtonians) und Inspired Abandon für Impulse. Letzeres ist ein sehr mitreissendes Album, ebenfalls mit Ellingtonians eingespielt, u.a. Johnny Hodges, der auch auf dem Cover erwähnt wird. Auf CD gibt es das Album als Bonus auf Everybody Knows Johnny Hodges.
