gypsy tail windEllington, Bechet, Jelly Roll, Clarence Williams, Django, Monk (daher der Albumtitel), Traditionals … in der Band sitzen Nicholas Payton, Don Byron, Marc Ribot (akustische Gitarre), David Piltch und Jay Bellerose, Brad Mehldau und Joshua Redman absolvieren je einen Gastauftritt, Toussaint sitzt am Klavier und singt ein einziges Stück (Leonard Feathers „Long, Long Journey“). Toussaint kann alles … die Piano-Linie aus New Orleans – Jelly Roll Morton, Lil Hardin, Fats Domino, Ellis Marsalis, Professor Longhair, Dr. John, Henry Butler … – hat sich nie gross um Stilgrenzen gekümmert, dünkt mich – und ist doch sofort erkennbar.
Klingt beeindruckend aber auch so, als gäbe es von allem zuviel. Was hat Brad Mehldau da verloren?
