Strictly speaking, all that has happened is that a formidable pianist has expanded his keyboard technique to absorb both the electric piano and the synthesizer. Bley finds this a most natural evolution, in the tradition of the recent electrifying of so many instruments. To Paul, the synthesizer is „quite legitimate and capable of great nuance; it has so many possibilities and cries for release and freedom. Above all, like any musical instrument, its power is primarily in the hands of the player.“ With this in mind, he emphasizes the basic naturalness of this recording: the entire album was done in three three-hour sessions, and is heard as played, with no overdubbing.
Annette Peacock ist als Musikerin zwar nicht mehr dabei, aber sie hat alle Stücke des Albums komponiert. Bley wird von drei verschiedenen Rhythmusgruppen begleitet: Dick Younstein (b)/Steve Haas (d), Glenn Moore (b)/Haas (d) und Frank Tusa (b)/Bobby Moses (d), die Sessions fanden im Dezember 1970 sowie im Januar und März 1971 statt. Bley ist in den Stücken „Gary“ und „Circles“ am akustischen Piano zu hören, meditative Trio-Nummer, in denen Haas fast nur Gong-Effekte auf den Cymbals spielt und Moore bzw. Youngstein einen beweglichen, tiefen Bass unter Bleys sparsame Linien legen.
