Zu den Albumcovern berichtete George Avakian, als 1996 die Box erschien:

The Miles Ahead Album Covers
There has been some debate over the change in album cover artwork for Miles Ahead. It has been reported that Miles vehemently objected to the original cover with the photograph of the white woman on a sailboat. Miles did ask me, „Why’d you put that white bitch on there,“ however, he spoke those words not in anger, but in a nonchalant manner. That was just Miles indulding what I cam to recognize as his shock-hyperbole style. His very next sentence delivered with a chuckle, was merely a quiet, „You should have used a black girl.“ We settled the matter intelligently, in about 30 seconds. Miles agreed that we should exhaust the supply of original covers so that tens-of-thousands of sales wouldn’t be lost while switching covers. We dcided that the best replacement cover would be a new photograph of Miles himself.
Those who didn’t know Miles Davis in the mid‘-50s may be surprised to discover that he was a pussy cat, even thouth he loved to push the „naughtiness“ envelope — always with a sly glance to check how well he was scoring. Of course he changed the glance to a glare after he developed his „bad boy“ reputation, but he never tried it on old friends.“
