Wer’s genauer wissen will, ich habe auf http://www.thewho.net/reviews/quadst.htm mal etwas mehr über den unterschiedlichen Mix geschrieben:
At first I thought I would not buy this re-mastered soundtrack-CD as I have the remixed original album and the double-LP-version of the soundtrack. But now I’m glad I did it! Not only for „Joker James“, „Four Faces“ and „Get out and stay out“ but for the different mix and the additional overdubs on the songs that also appear on the original album. There are a lot more noticeable differences than the ones Daniel Rainey suggested here before.
First „The Real Me“: The main difference is in the stereo-balance! On the Soundtrack you get the classic Who-Mix (John left – Pete right), which gives both bass and guitar more space than on the original album, where bass and electric guitar are mainly on the left side.
Next is „I’m One“: On the soundtrack is a quite prominent piano that’s not on the original album.
On the soundtrack-mix of „5:15“ the bass is surprisingly less prominent than on the original mix – the guitar seems to be a bit louder instead, which I like for this song.
„Love reign o’er me“ has a lot of orchestration with strings and horns that the album-version doesn’t have, which I also like – it’s so fat and bombastic that it sends shivers down my spine!
„Bell Boy“ gets the same improvement as „Real Me“ with the classic Who-Mix. The acoustic guitar that used to be in the verses is missing now, but the keyboard-parts have somehow been treated and sound better than on the original album.
„I’ve had enough“ comes with the same change in the stereo-balance as in „Bell Boy“, and it works fine again: Cut the acoustic guitar on the right, put the electric guitar from the left over to the right. Furthermore there’s a lot of orchestration (check out Pete’s Diaries where he offers a free download of the strings that were used here). I can’t help it, but I think that the song doesn’t suffer from this but again has more punch that the original version.
„Dr. Jimmy“ has (as Daniel already wrote) a more prominent bass and lacks the sound-collage-intro.
On „The Punk And The Godfather“ the audience applause after Pete’s middle eight part is missing which I find is no improvement. Furthermore the mix of Pete’s two vocal tracks is not as faithful as on the original version. The acoustic guitars that are quite prominent on the right speaker in the mix of the original album have been put to the left together with the much louder (and distorted) bass, but on this track I feel it doesn’t work as good as on the above mentioned. And then you get the fine selection of 60s tracks that were also on the double-LP plus „I’m the face“ which wasn’t on the LPs.
I would recommend this re-mastered Soundtrack to any Who-/60s-Fan! Compare the above mentioned Quad-Songs to the original album, don’t you agree that (let „Punk & Godfather“ be an exception) they rock better than original versions?
