My oldest sister Ada was married to a jazz tuba player in St. Louis, by the name of Sy McField, and Sy, uh, used to allow me to hand around with him and go around to the rehearsals, andd, uh, the main reason I got really attracted to the trumpet was because one of the people in the orchestra in which my brother-in-law played was a candy store owner, and he used to bring his pockets filles with, uh, caramels and Mary Jane’s, my two favorite candies, and he’d always let me have one or two.

Auf der CD ist als Bonus auch „Summit Meeting“ enthalten, das ich hier schon kurz besprochen habe. Das erste Album mit der „Big BAD Band“ Terrys ist 1976 entstanden und auch dazu habe ich schon etwas geschrieben.
Wer in Warschau die Solisten waren, ist mir nicht klar, dazu kenne ich die meisten beteiligten Musiker nicht gut genug, aber Chris Woods (as) ist wieder mit dabei, am Piano sitzt der viel zu früh verstorbene Hilton Ruiz, die Rhythmusgruppe wird von Victor Sproles (b) und Czeslaw Bartkowski (d) komplettiert. Ansonsten sind u.a. Willie Cook (t), John Gordon und Chuck Connors (tb) sowie Charles Williams, Bill Saxton und Charles Davis (reeds) dabei. Das Tenor-Solo in Ernie Wilkins‘ Theme-Song „Big Bad Blues“ dürfte wohl von Saxton stammen, am Bari wird wohl Davis und am Alt Woods zu hören sein, aber möglicherweise auch mal Williams… und an der Trompete dürfte durchaus auch Cook mal zu hören sein. Das Repertoire finde ich hier etwas interessanter als zwei Jahre zuvor: Als Opener gibt es Peter Herbolzheimers „Blues in My Shoes“, gefolgt von Ellingtons „Squeeze Me“ (Clark singt hier auch), Monks „Straight No Chaser“, Wilkins‘ Band-Song, KDs „Una mas“, Yusef Lateefs „Warm Hearted Blues“ und schliesslich zuletzt Frank Wess‘ leicht zickiger Blues „Shell Game“. Terry ist in Form und hat hörbar Spass, sein Ton ist wunderbar, geht direkt ins Herz.

Ich hätte jedenfalls grosse Lust, auch die Big BAD Band-Aufnahmen von 1970 (Big Bad Band, Etoile CPR-1A) und 1974 (Live at the Wichita Jazz Festival 1974, Vanguard VSD79355) zu hören! Letzere scheint ja auch als CD vorzuliegen.
