I told you I was making another record!

If you count Fanfare (which I’m told I must), Bang Goes The Knighthood is my tenth album. Bored yet?

I always prized longevity over fame and fortune, so to get to double figures is really wonderful. Thanks to all of you who have made that possible by buying my humble offerings and coming to my silly shows.

More than ever before, I think I’ve got closer on this record to what I initially envisaged. Buggered up a little less. I hope you agree.

I’d been accumulating songs since finishing Victory (whilst simultaneously penning a musical, a film score and an album about cricket with a mate) and was finally happy I had enough tunes for a record in January 2009. I threw down the basics with Simon and Tim in a lovely little Dublin studio called Exchequer Street. Fun times indeed. We even tried a few completely live. They went well. Should’ve done more that way really. Oh well.

Later we had our most successful orchestral session to date in RAK in St.John’s Wood. Knocked out the six orchestrated tunes in one day! This I put down to the excellent players (more available than usual – must be the recession), and Andrew’s exquisite arrangements. I bowed out of that area completely. He knows how to turn me on.

There was a bit of a gap while Duckworth and I fulfilled our fantasies, but as soon as the cricket season was over I threw myself back into it. One never quite remembers from one album to the next just how hard it is to finish the damn thing. You’re loathe to let go of your baby. But the time has come to release it into the wild. Fly little album, fly…

Enormous thanks are due to Fergal Davis who engineered, Cathy Davey who added vocals and drums, and Thomas Walsh who hung around and made us laugh.
