Am liebsten sind mir Lyrics, die ein bestimmtes grundsätzliches Gefühl oder einen Gedanken einfangen. Ob das jetzt sprachlich sehr kreativ geschieht, mit Bildern, die vielerlei Deutungsmöglichkeiten bieten und mich lange herumrätseln lassen, oder als nüchternes „So ist es“, ist fast egal. Ersteres lädt ein zu mind games, Letzteres ist oft ergreifender.
Am anregendsten sind Texte, die zwar auch ohne Musik zu deuten sind, also wie ein Gedicht, die aber durch die Musik noch eine weitere Deutungsebene erhalten (wie etwa „Concrete Walls“ von Fever Ray).
Zu meinen liebsten Lyrics gehört „I See A Darkness“ von Bonnie ‚Prince‘ Billy; Es ist einer von den „So ist es“-Texten, der viele meiner Gedanken zu Einsamkeit, Freundschaft, Zweifel und Utopie genau auf den Punkt bringt und mich immer auf die gute Art völlig fertig macht. Sprachlich ist er eher nüchtern (Will Oldham kann auch ganz anders) und würde anders auch nicht seine Wirkung entfalten. Allein die ersten beiden Zeilen gehören zum Herzzerreißendsten, was ich kenne; wenn das lyrische Ich ganz leise, quasi im Hinterkopf, sich dieser Freundschaft gar nicht so sicher zu sein scheint, wie es zuerst den Anschein hat.
Und zum Ende hab ich in einem anderen Thread geschrieben: „We can stop our whoring / And pull the smiles inside / And light it up forever / And never go to sleep“ verbindet erwachsene Resignation so schön mit kindlicher Unendlichkeitsillusion, dass mir immer ganz illuminiert zumang wird.
