Porest is a one-man collage terrorist from Oakland, CA aka Mark Gergis. This is his fourth album and I’m really curious about his past work and most of the stuff from this small label called Abduction. Well, to put it easily, Porest is a huge melting pot of different influences like Middle East, spoken parts (and very funny), strange noises etc. in a way it reminded me of Cassetteboy but Porest does not really cut up celebrity speeches and make British fun, this is much more surreal and dada than that.
The second track `
let’s roll` is sure to make people angry, as the label put it, “This album is a lit-fuse, bound to be banned!” Although it’s satirical, most people will get easily offended, like the “caricatures”. Lines like `my american passport is my greatest asset` or `when i masturbate i think of bin ladin` are seriously Dada in the same old anti-war / anti-art collage way. However this is not just a provocative political album, it also has a great catchy folkish song called `Hoyda` and later on a track where 70s soulful stuff meets Qu’ran reading, and a song on cannibalism to supply food to American homes and other strange stuff like the culture shock you’d get if you wake up one morning in the middle of a Middle Eastern bazaar.
