Die naheliegende Vermutung, hier käme ein Cover eines bekannten Tom Waits-Songs, bestätigt sich nicht. Dieser Song wurde von Scott Nolan für Hayes Carll komponiert. Carll ist ein 32-jähriger Künstler aus Woodland, Texas, der in 2002 anlässlich seines Debut-Albums „Flowers and liquor“ von der Houston Press zum „Best Folk Act and New Artist“ gekürt wurde. „Trouble in mind“ ist das dritte Hayes Carll-Album, welches sich stilsicher auf die Spuren von Guy Clark, Steve Earle oder Ray Wylie Hubbard begibt.
