I’ll take this over Buena Vista Social Club 9 times out of 10. Where Cooder is a stodgy traditionalist, a folkie if you will, bent on maintaining a pristine view of a culture, Ribot’s got a post-modern approach. I hate that phrase, but it applies here: he takes what he likes from wherever he likes and makes a new thing out of it. What he likes here is Cuban pop music from what often sounds like the 50’s, which is then transformed by his unique guitar sound and, most importantly perhaps, the sense of humor and fun that permeates the album. I love the follow-up for these reasons and more as well, but this one is perhaps more varied, though no more or less divertido.
