Matt Johnson, geboren 1961 in London, gründete die Band „The The“ im Jahre 1979. Ab 1982 kann man das Ganze jedoch als Solo-Projekt von Matt Johnson bezeichnen. Nach einem Album unter seinem Namen namens „Burning blue soul“ wurden unter dem Band-Namen hernach 7 Alben veröffentlicht. Darüberhinaus soll es jedoch noch weiteres, nicht veröffentliches Material geben. „This is the day“ ist für mich Johnson’s schönster Song auf dem besten Album der Band.
