„There’s also little point in trying somehow to extrapolate the truth about what really took place in Munich that time. Bearing in mind that it happened so long ago, and that during those 24 hours in question the key players in the drama were both on acid, in these circumstances lofty notions of truth fly out the window. Perhaps Munich’s real significance in the 1990s is all the mythology that has been attached to it ever since. It is possible that the German hippies were part of some extreme cult, or that they were political activists. It is possible that attempts at brainwashing – sadly so fashionable in those days – did take place whilst Peter was downstairs in that basement studio, but no one can ever know for sure.
Similarly, no one can ever prove that Munich was the trauma that set off some or all of Peter’s subsequent health problems and erratic behaviour. Given this eternal uncertainty, it is perhaps better to stick to what few known facts there are, even though these might demystify the legend somewhat and replace it with something more mundane yet credible.“
