Nach intensiver Selektion versuche ich mich auch mal. Vorweg sei erwähnt, dass ich gewisse hier bereits genannte und auch andere in Erwägung gezogene Bands nicht hier unterbringen wollte. So sehe ich z.B. Bands wie Jethro Tull, Supertramp oder auch Rush hier nicht richtig eingeordnet. Nachgedacht habe ich auch über Bands wie Sweet Smoke (bevorzugten eher Jazz-Elemente mit vertrackten Rockstrukturen) oder auch Tool oder die Band Stray aus den frühen 70-ern, die ich jedoch beide eher dem reinen (Hard)Rock-Genre zuordne. Auch die frühe Phase von Pink Floyd mit Syd Barrett hat i.m.o. nichts mit Prog-Rock zu tun. Prog-Rock setzt ausufernde Stücke voraus, wo der Einsatz von (oftmals breitflächigen) Keyboards ein vorherrschendes Stilmittel ist und stets Raum für lange oder zumindest längere Soli war.
