Die frühen Versionen kenne ich nicht. Außer „Weekend without Makeup“ hatte ich vorher nur „Fulwood Babylon“ und „Last Night on Northgate Street“ gehört. Ich bin erst spät auf die Long Blondes aufmerksam geworden.
Anyway, an der „A-Seite“ des Albums ist rein gar nichts auszusetzen. Begeistern kann ich mich vor allem für „Once and never again“ und „Giddy Stratospheres“ sowie (etwas weniger) für „Lust in the Movies“ und „Heaven help the new Girl“; die beiden anderen Songs finde ich auch sehr erfreulich. Die „B-Seite“ gefällt mir insgesamt weniger. Bei „Separated by Motorways“ sollte man nicht versäumen, das „So long!“ mitzubrüllen.
Das Album macht mir schon viel Spaß. Es hat catchy Melodien, schwungvolle Rhythmen und gelungene Lyrics, die gute Geschichten erzählen; und die Band hat eine gewisse punkige Unbekümmertheit und eine gute Sängerin und wirkt sehr sympathisch. Aber ich unterschreibe auch folgende Aussage:
