bbc: Fresh from winning the 2003 Perrier Award, American standup Demetri Martin performed his amiable and cerebral musings on life for this BBC4 presentation of his act, recorded at the Riverside Studios, London. Martin talked about his tendency to over-analyse and accompanied his meanderings with a slide show of anagrams and number codes, warning of the loneliness that comes from being a nerd. The thrust of the show was that most of Martin’s abilities – brilliant at maths, a wizard with words – have never actually helped him. He then demonstrated his other so called ‚useless talents‘: juggling, unicycling, coin manipulation – to underline the fact.
Sharp, funny and winningly self-deprecating, this was a low-key triumph that demonstrated in no uncertain terms why this young New Yorker’s style held particular appeal for UK audiences.
