“Hymns were the beginning of it all. Hymns were the first music Hank heard, and they colored his own music as nothing else ever would. […] His mother, Lillie, later remembered how Hank would always sit beside her as she played the church organ, and in one of his rare interviews, Hank too recalled those Sundays at his mother’s side. ‘My earliest memory’, he said in 1952, ‘is sittin’ on that organ stool by her and hollerin’. I must have been five, six years old, and louder’n anybody else.’” (Colin Escott)
