Killer vinyl edition of the classic underground free jazz side In Paris, Aries 1973 from Black Artists Group on Rank And File.
Long-time coming vinyl reissue in an edition of 500 copies of this amazing private press free jazz side: BAG were an association of improvisers, artists, writers, poets and activists based in St Louis. Loosely modelled after Chicago’s AACM, they included a bunch of players that would soon make a splash in the free jazz underground, including Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill, Joseph Bowie and Charles ‘Bobo’ Shaw. Following in the footsteps of The Art Ensemble, BAG upped instruments and headed to Paris in the early-70s and this incredible recording documents a live performance from a quintet that featured saxophonist Oliver Lake, trombonist Joseph Bowie, trumpeter Baikida E.J. Carroll, drummer Charles ‘Bobo’ Shaw and trumpeter Floyd Le Flore. The feel is of ritualistic free-form with lots of percussion, flute, marimba, conga, mud drums… and the brass is totally off the hook with parallel streams of high testifying tone raising the skies with the stream of their music. This has been on a lot of wants lists ever since Thurston dropped it into his Top 10 Free Jazz Underground feature back in the day and it more than lives up to the hype. Also comes with excellent liners from Benjamin Looker, whose history of BAG, Point From Which Creation Begin, is well worth searching out. Highly recommended!
