ich habe auch Vredens dag von Carl Dreyer gesehen (1943, dt.: Tag der Rache / Tag des Zorns).

Man kann den Einfluss, den Dreyers Werk, wie auch diese berührende Tragödie, auf den internationalen Film – von der Nouvelle vague bishin zu einem Sidney Lumet – hatte und hat, wohl nicht hoch genug einschätzen. Lumet schreibt in seinem guten Buch „Making Movies“:
„As this paring down starts, an interesting phenomenon begins to take place. Clearly, the production starts to become more stylized. The increased stylization can reveal a more profound truth. Carl Dreyer’s ‚The Passion of Joan of Arc‘ is a perfect example. The picture was made within a very limited (highly stylized) vocabulary. As the range of visual language was reduced, the movie took on wider and wider implications. Finally, a simple close-up of Falconetti in Joan’s last moment of suffering said it all: war, death, religion, transcendence.
The more confined and specific the choices were, the more universal the results became.“
Auch die bedrückende Kraft von „Tag der Rache“ kommt aus der Zurückhaltung in der Wahl der Mittel. Dreyer arbeitet mit suggestiver Beleuchtung, geometrischen Formen, prägnanten Schwenks.
