In einem Konzertbericht hat Brian Howe von Pitchfork ein paar schöne Sätze über Tender Buttons geschrieben:

Brian Howe On the first few passes, it (Tender Buttons) sounds fine but unremarkable. You might notice some great melodies and memorable sounds, but they’re all covered in a thin layer of frost. There’s a sense of chilly ambivalence toward the listener; the songs neither push you away nor draw you in– they’re just there, aloof, waiting for someone to listen in. Or not. But you keep coming back — the album’s combination of beauty and inapproachability is enticing, like a crush whose allure is only amplified by the fact that she seems oblivious to your advances — and eventually, the frost begins to thaw and drip; the album opens up and warmth rushes in to fill those cold blank spaces; you begin to notice the off-kilter and finally human tilts of Trish Keenan’s often-startling lyrics.
