CLEVELAND – best concert I’ve ever been to Reply
…serously – no joke. I’m still flying.
I’m too tired and *hic* tired to post a full play-by-play right now, but I’ll just give y’all a few words and a quasi-setlist.
And I meant it. This was the best concert I’ve ever been to. Every little piece of magic that drew me to Ryan and his music in the beginning was shining bright and on display for the whole city to see tonight. From the first song to the last. He was energetic. He was humble. He was playful. He was excited! He was shy. He was overwhelmed. He was bigger than life. He was electric. He was unbelieveably gracious and appreciative. He was happy and he was enjoying life, music and the people. Magic.
Anyhow, enough dribble… I don’t right down setlists during shows (and people that do annoy me even though I always appreciate it afterwards), so here’s a not-so-accurate account of the songs he played, mostly in random order – my quasi-setlist:
– „One shot and one beer“ – probably a new original, NOT the old John Lee Hooker song. Sounded a lot like some old rockin‘ Hank Williams.
– another new song, not on Cold Roses
– To Be Young
– Please Do Not Let Me Go
– Magnolia Mountain (amazing jam/solos)
– When The Stars Go Blue
– Beautiful Sorta
– La Cienega
– new song, „walls…“ *
– Rescue Blues (piano solo) *
– NY NY
– Mockingbird Sing
– Sweet Lil‘ Gal *
– Slyvia Plath *
– new song, sounds like acoustic Let It Ride a little *
– Jacksonville Skyline
– Let It Ride
– Oh my Sweet Carolina
– AMY *
– Wonder Wall *
Encore:
– Jacksonville (new Gram-ish country rocker – kills!)
– Winding Wheel
– Trains (new song, country bluesy, rocks)
– Come Pick Me Up (he was gonna play Bird Song but said fuck it, he’d play what we wanted to hear and he wanted to play one of his songs instead of a cover.)
songs with the * mean Ryan played it solo.
so there you go. with the exception of the first 4 or 5 songs and the encore the order is really wrong, but that’s pretty close to the songs he played.
I’ll post something later so that’s it for now. I just can’t say enough about how happy and appreciative he was and kept thanking us and telling us how he loved the city and the people. He even went into a speech towards the end about how some nights you make the best of it but others you catch lightening in a bottle, so to speak, and he said „nights like tonight“ are why he „loves music“ and he does what he does. After he thanked the crowd several more times when the music was over (the HoB kicked him off after a good 2 and a half hours), he stepped back from the mic, waved, then got down on his knees and bowed to us and kissed the ground and then walked off.
Lightening in a bottle.
