Eine kurze Erläuterung zur Liste. Ich habe mich schweren Herzens entschlossen, Compilations und Box Sets von Aufnahmen aus der Zeit vor der Einführung der LP außen vor zu lassen. Das betrifft beispielsweise Aufnahmen von Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Jelly Roll Morton und Louis Armstrong. Aufgenommen habe ich jedoch Livealben, weil sich darunter absolut essentielle Aufnahmen befinden. Es stört mich auch nicht, wenn sich darunter auch umfangreiche Boxsets wie im Fall von Miles Davis, John Coltrane und Keith Jarrett befinden.
Ich habe im Fall von Ornette Coleman darauf verzichtet, die Alben aufzudröseln und das Box Set aufgeführt. Grund: Die Alben dieser Jahre sind (fast) alle essentiell, vor allem kenne ich sie jedoch „nur“ in der nach Sessions geordneten Form auf dem Box Set. Wer die Einzelalben auf Vinyl oder CD besitzt, mag sich daran stören, ich tue das nicht. Selbiges gilt für Art Tatum.
