Bill Evans – Momentum [1 & 2] | Ein Neuzugang in der Evans-Sammlung noch zur Nacht – zwei Volumen (bzw. zuerst eine Doppel-CD bei Limetree, ich hab die japanischen Einzel-Reissues) aus der Stadsschouwburg in Groningen am 4. Februar 1972 mit Eddie Gomez und Marty Morell. Es gibt das übliche Repertoire, aber das Trio ist in Form – was auch im Titel reflektiert wird, den laut Wikipedia Evans‘ Witwe Nanette wählte: „‚At the time of this recording in 1972, Bill was experiencing a momentous upswing in his personal life, his health, and his career,‘ she remembered. ‚So I would like to give the album the appropriate title of Momentum.'“ Es gibt dichtes Interplay, Gomez wechselt fliegend zwischen Begleitung und Kommentar, Morell wirkt oft recht frei, und Evans klingt sehr frisch. Los geht es mit „Re: Person I Knew“, „Elsa“ und „Turn Out the Stars“. LaFaros „Gloria’s Step“ ist vom ersten Eindruck her definitiv das Highlight, das längste Stück auf Vol. 1, das mit „Emily“ und „Quiet Now“ endet. Auf Vol. 2 geht es mit zwei noch längeren Stücken los, „My Romance“ und „Sugar Plum“ – und gerade in diesen langen Stücken blüht das Trio auf. Auch „The Two Lonely People“ (Evans) und „Who Can I Turn To“ sind acht Minuten lang und dieses zweite Set vom ersten Eindruck her nochmal etwas besser als das erste. „What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life“ und ein leider unvollständiges „Nardis“ folgen noch, letzteres nochmal super.
Die Fantasy-Box hab ich auch noch wiedergefunden … aber Evans vertiefen bleibt ein zukünftiges Projekt.
